Disk drive interferes with network/broadband connection

Strange situation, I have an SATA disk drive in an external USB enclosure, and when I plug it in, my broadband speed drops dramatically. Broadband is connected through Ethernet, through a set of Ethernet-Mains adapter plugs, to the modem.

I thought the USB enclosure might be the problem, as I bought it cheap on eBay, so I swapped it for another one, but got the same problem.

I have 4, mains powered, USB disk drives in total, and this is the only one that causes such a problem. Anyone got any suggestions as to what might be going on?

McAfee Antivirus 8.5 and Comodo Firewall pro. I think I see where you're coming from, if they go mad scanning the disk when it's plugged in, then they might hog the net connection, is that it? I don't think that's it though.

It seems that comodo no longer comes as a standalone firewall and now includes antivirus, renamed Comodo Internet Security. Running two antivirus programs on the same system can cause instability, and may be the cause of your problem. Comodo Pro also included Antivirus.
