Heading to Fiji for a week at the end of January and just looking for a nice place to chill out on the beach. We'll be on a fairly tight budget so resorts etc are out of the question. Any ideas?

If you're after beaches, as soon as you land head out to the islands. The beaches aren't great on the mainland and Nadi isn't the most exciting of towns. As its the wet season some places have special offers and some resorts have the option of dormitories, which can be less expensive. Bring cash to the islands with you as they may not have credit card facilities. Make sure to bring mozzie spray too!

Have a look at these -

    Hi,

I booked through Awesome Fiji and it was fine... If your up for a party don't expect much, except for Beachcomber Island which is good fun (apart from staying in an 80+ bed dorm!) food is great there and you can get private rooms also..

I went to Manta Ray Island and Waya LaiLai also and they were beautiful... Chilled out day and night, with the option of having Kava with the locals... :-)

I also went Snorkelling with Reef Sharks at Waya Lai Lai, amazing experience, we got to pet them and all! The only thing was a huge Hammerhead Shark swam over to our little speedboat on our way back to the island! I stuck my hear under the water to see it, man was it big!!

you can pretty much rock up in Nadi and book stuff there, I think it's better that way, especially if you're on your own. Most of the islands though are resorts, and the boats can be expensive. Beachcomber is great craic, you'll never have access to so many drunk backpacker chicks in your life, that literally can't escape from you the island is so small, lol.
