    Hi Games Folk,

I'm looking for a bit of a steer on what's good for the Wii, not just in terms of games but hardware or downloadables etc too. Basically I was lucky enough to get one as a gift and plan to really make the best of it, so I'd appreciate any guidance from more experienced users.

Up until about 12 years ago I was very into games. SNES was my favorite console, though I did start getting into the N64 when it came out. Mortal Kombat II, Zelda, Mario Kart, all the Mario platform games were what I was generally into but between music and sport, I didn't really have the money or time to play.

Star-wipe to 2008 and I now posess a Wii, given to me in it's phoetal one-controller and basic-game-package state. I also now am an adult with a job and some potentially disposable income. Since yesterday I've set it up online via wi-fi and bought a few thousand shopping points, mainly to buy Mario & Street Fighter etc but I don't yet have a suitable controlller. I've played all the sports, set up my Mii and it's good fun but I'd like some games with a bit more meat on their bones.

So where to from here? My own thoughts were to start with one more Wii controller, two Cube controllers, some old-school downloads and a couple of decent new games...? Do I need to worry about memory? Are there any particular controllers that are best to get? Would I be better off starting with the versions of games from a couple of years ago before playing the new ones? I'm probably not even asking the right questions but if anyone wants to offer any guidance it'd be much appreicated.

In terms of hardware I'd get another wii controller and nunchuk and classic style controller. The only add on that I found to be any use tbh was the steering wheel. I didn't like the zapper. The internal memory is really small. But nintendo have announced that in the future you'll be able to expand it with an sd card so I'd wait for that. If you plan on playing gamecube games you'll need a gamecube memory card also.

For games just get whatever you want. I'm too young too have really played any NES games and imo they haven't aged well. I just can't get into them. Some of the Snes games on it are fantastic. If your getting new games check if there's an older version on gamecube. Instead of getting metroid prime 3 I'd recommend picking the first one up for the cube first. Again super smash bros brawl isn't much different to melee on gamecube so I'd get that instead too. Dunno how easy it is to find them but you'd probably see them on adverts or the like.

If your looking for any particular games I'd say start with zelda and mario. Wii play is decent enough and it comes with a free controller. There's a few good multiplatform games too like call of duty 5 and guitar hero. Then there's also metroid prime 3, super smash bros and mario kart but these are all pretty similar to the ones on gamecube so I'd see if you can pick them up on the cheap. Then there's a big back catalogue of gamecube games too.

Cool, thanks for that. Yeah shame the memory is small. I wasn't actually aware that I could use GameCube games or that it took a GameCube memory card so I'll see what's available and maybe pick up a few legacy titles.

Mario Galaxy and Mario Kart Wii as well as the Call of Duty games are what have caught my eye from doing a bit of research on YouTube looking at gameplay clips.

Can't go wrong with Mario Kart or Mario Galaxy to be honest. I wouldn't recommend the first Call of Duty title on the Wii (can't recall the name) but the new one is supposed to be good.

    Thanks im...LOST

One quick one (as I'm on my way out to buy), on the downloaded games it says "compatible with GameCube and Classic controller" but... "maybe optimised for classic controller"

I can't figure out if this means the Classic gives optimum performance or the GabeCube is better and they've done the best they could for classic controller users???

I would have imagined the GC was better. I'm buying two so don't wanna get it wrong...

The gamecube controller is a bit difficult to use on some of the downloadable games. The button configuration doesn't suit snes or some N64 games for instance. It works but the classic controller is nicer for them.

Cheers RG, I got a Classic controller and it's working great. So far have downloaded Mario 64, Mario Kart 64 and (sigh... couldn't resist) Street Fighter II Turbo. All great. My first time playing a 3D mario game having been consumed by 1, 2, 3, Lost Levels and World in my youth. I've gotten into it and collected a decent amount of the stars but still feels odd. Thought it'd be better to get through the 64 version before going for the newer Galaxy one anyway.

Generally I find the Wii great anyway but a few queries...

I was under the impression (from the Ian Wright/Sean Wright-Phillips ad) that you could play the Wii Sports tennis game online, versus other Wii users. I've looked through the Wii and Sports game manuals and it doesn't seem to mention it. My Mii is just about pro-level and getting a bit bored with the v-CPU games. Is it possible to play other people at tennis or other sports?
I assume it would be far too much to ask that it could play Street Fighter or Mario Kart against other users?

You can't play VC games or Wii sports online. The Wii mario kart can be played online though.

I wouldn't totally write off NES games. Many have aged badly like the first zelda but there are some absolute crackers on there like Castlevania 3 and Megaman 2. I also wouldn't bother with the GC version of smash bros. Great as it is the Wii version is a massive improvement and it can be played online.

Yeah I was a big fan of Castlevania back in the day. Never actually played Megaman but must check it out.

Are there NES/SNES/64 games added to the downloadable list often? Or anywhere they list coming soon titles? I would really like to get my hands on Mortal Kombat II and III for the SNES.

Nintendo never say when they are releasing games but they usually get released on a thursday at midnight. It seems to alternate between VC games and Wii ware. The only way to guess whats coming soon is to look at the ratings bodies giving ratings to old games and even still it's not accurate (Axelay has been rated and unreleased in Europe for over 2 years due to some dodgy licensing issues).

    http://www.vc-reviews.com/

Thats an excellent site for all the VC games and whats coming up.

MK2 and 3 aren't the games you remember them to be. Now that the gore looks silly MK3 is an absolutely rotten game and MK2 is merely okay. Stick to Street Fighter, it's a timeless classic.

Hmmm, i remember MK II being more slick playabilitywise than SF2. I'm pretty sure i still remember all the death moves etc so would be a larf to put all that useless info to some amusing use. MKIII was fun but really just a circus of outrageous "combos". The day I saw a 10 hit combo I pretty much put the controller down and didn't pick it up til i got the wii ;)

Really getting into Mario 64. Still feels really alien in 3d to me. Especially using C to shift your view angle. Still, I figure it would be best to get thru this before buying the Galaxy.

That type of talk could get you killed on these boards you know.
On no level, ever, will Mortal Kombat II or any of its variants ever be as good as the Street Fighter series.
I'm not a fighter fan but thats the truth of it.
It's ok to prefer MKII, but do it in private, in your own home, with the blinds closed...

Go on and get Super Mario Galaxy, no need to play Super Mario 64 first at all, I mean you can, but Super Mario Galaxy is such a colourful work of genius, hard to resist.

Also, see if you can pick up Resi 4 Wii edition, Metroid Prime 3 and, Medal Of Honour Heroes 2, I know the last one is contraversial, but it's an excellent game, in a underused genre on the Wii.

Time to play Mario Galaxy it would seem. That cue sports, snooker vs billiards is wifi enabled too, looks like it might be good. Have Midnight Pool myself and i only wish that was wifi/friends enabled.

Oh I did have a few gos of a MOH game on the PS2 a few years ago and thought it was good. Would certainly like to give a Wii version a try.

Call of Duty World at War on the Wii is supposedly better than MOH and has online play as well.

I got this for Christmas as I have every other highly ranked/rated game on the Wii because I really was at a loss as to what game I was going to get. Anyway I got this with little or no expectations because I have never liked shooter games, mainly because of the lack of proper control of where you are aiming etc and could never full get to grips with the analogue stick on the PS3/Xbox360 etc.

I have to say was blown away by this game (excuse the pun!), the control scheme is excellent and with the Wii Remote the game is taken to another level. Granted the Graphics are nothing compared to the PS3 or Xbox, however I am not an ubergeek who gets hung up on that kind of rubbish...Im a Nintendo fan from the NES onwards so it has always been quality gameplay I look for.

Which brings me to the gameplay, which is excellent, genuinely scary stuff, especially the villagers and the Chainsaw wielding character. The storyline is really good also and having got this Christmas day, I have not stopped playing it since. I would recommend it completely and it will give you at least 20 hours game play. I even find myself stopping after 2/3 chapters to get some longevity out of it.

Pick it up in game second hand and you will not be disappointed.

I am going to have to get the new Call of Duty and Metroid now because this game has started off a love of this genre for me

    Happy Gaming!

Excellent, thanks for that. Just the kind of info I was looking for.

Rather than start a new thread I want to ask a Wii question. I am not a gamer by any means, but I enjoy nice simple basic games, like Mario cart I guess. I am beginning to tire of that though. Is there any other good driving/racing games around for the Wii?

I have not played Smash Brothers yet as I still think it is a bit above me :o

There is not really any decent racing games out on the Wii at the moment to be honest mate! Probably due to the Wii being way behind the Xbox and PS3. If you are a casual gamer, I would recommend something like WarioWare maybe...bit quirky and not everyones cup of tea but I found it great fun and got a bit of longevity out of it too :)
