Sony KDL40V4000 Vs LG 42LG7000

I'm heading up North tomorrow and don't know which of these to go for. I can get either for approx €600. Everyone is shouting Sony, but I can't ignore the fact that the LG has a bigger screen, a better contrast ratio, 100Hz and is even cheaper than the Sony by a few quid.

I took a look at the Sony in my local curry's here down south and I thought the glossy casing on the tv around the lcd panel looked really cheap compared to other sony models I'd seen (that were even cheaper, but of a lesser spec/price). When I saw the Sony the other day they were just playing an episode of the Simpsons on it (no idea what the source was), but compared to to other similarly priced TVs around it, it was quite jagged and that was while displaying a animation. On the day I wasn't aware of the LG so I can't comment on the quality of that first hand, but I thought that the Sony looked smaller (for some reason, again probably because of the crap casing) that other similarly priced 40" sets.

Primarily I will be connecting this TV up to both analogue and digital NTL. Sometimes coming in through simple coax, and other times through scart. Apart from that I will be watching upscaled DVDs and probably connecting up my gaming PC via (DVI - HDMI).

Which would you go for and more importantly why?

I reckon the Sony Bravia would be the best option on reading a lot of reviews on it. I will be changing from a 32" LG 32LC46 set which we use with Blue Ray player on PS3. We only have Lg set about 6mts and I am dissapointed with the HD picture quality. Its a pity for current economic situation that I can but the Sony TV in Currys N.I. for £599 which roughly converts to about €630 and it is costing €899 less 10% discount in Currys in Sligo.

I picked up the new sony bravia 40w4500 for £850 yesterday in richersounds in belfast. It worked out at €892.70. It would have cost £1119 in the sony store in belfast, or €1399 in the sony store in dublin.

    Hi ve,
I've been looking at buying that LG model for a while now. They have it stocked in my local Currys at 799e. I wasn't impressed at all with the picture quality from the Blu-ray they had playing. The film looked like it was 'sped-up'. After a bit of Google-ing it looks like you can disable whatever feature it is that causes this. Also I asked about the digital tuner... and got a 'What's MPEG?' answer. It's not MPEG 4 anyways so won't work here I believe.

I'm going to go back tomorrow to have a play around with the settings. Btw, it's a lovely looking TV.

That sped up effect is the 100hz. It definitely does'nt suit film material but it is of use for normal tv, especially fast moving stuff like footie. Limited use for gaming too because i'd say it'd increase input lag which is definitely not desirable. A good deal none the less at 800e. Compared to other prices down south, that is. We're still being ripped off when you consider its 550£ at currys in the UK.If Currys ROI prices were the same as the converted sterling prices, they'd f 'in wipe the floor with PC and DiD. I cant see why they wouldn't like dominating the market. Probably because they're able to get away with their current pricing policy:rolleyes:

I totally agree Zonda. With price differences like that, no wonder people are going North. I was surprised to see so many people walking out with LCDs in Curry's today.

Also...maybe you can answer my next question - can you turn the effect off? I'm still hoping to pop down tomorrow and have a play around with the settings.

    Hi there,
just to let you know that i tried to get Sony Bravia in Currys in N.I. but every branch were out of stock, travelled to Currys inEnniskillen and the next best Tv in Samsung was even out of stock. Curry's mad with loads of people from South buying tv's, traffic also mental. Rang "Sam's Yer Man" in Belfast today and they will deliver Sony tv to me in Sligo, £599 + delivery £15 !
    Will have it this Friday!!

The 42LG7000 seems to be sold out everywhere in the North alright. Seems only a few Currys in the South have a few left. Currys in Blanch had 30+ @ 1200e on the 2nd Jan. I was told it was going back on sale at 900 euros from the 3rd Jan.

Not exactly pricing them to sell.

I just rang up Sam's Yer Man and this model is £699 but it's still cheaper than here in the Republic where it's 900euro but buy now as the euro is starting to fall against the sterling.;)

Sony arrived to my door from 'Sams Yer Man' on Tuesday. Picture quality on standard tv signal isn't the best, I have picture from sky freeview box with a co-axial cable so i don't expect it to be great, but picture is superb with the Ps3 and blu-ray player. Really delighted with it especially when I see it been sold in the south for €850 to €900 !!
