    Katie Taylor!

    Or is this PRO only?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,972 ✭✭✭joepenguin

Pro only walshb. Sorry should have said.

I thought I might do an amature one and a Irish one as well.

    Boards boxing awards 2008!!!

    Was thinking:

    Amature boxer of the year
Irish boxer of the year (can seperate ama and pro what do people think?)
    Fight of the year.
    Upset of the year
    KO of the year.

Could also have Irish only versions. fight, upset and ko of the year. Limited to fights involving an Irish fighters here or abroad. suggestions?

    How about:

    International:
    Fighter of the year
    Fight of the year
    ko of the year
    upset of the year
    prospect of the year

    Irish:
    fighter of the year
fight of the year(domestic fighters only)
    best fight in Irish ring
    ko of the year
    prospect of the year

    Irish amateur:
    fighter of the year
    fight of the year
    prospect of the year

I hate these vote things, its between Manny and Joe for me. I'm gonna vote for Joe as Manny will get all the Joe haters votes anyways.

For me it was between Manny and Margarito. imo Joe was boxing in 2008 purely for the big names, the glamour, the fame. He should have got those fights years ago especially Hopkins.

However he did beat the #1 guy in the division and then a top 5-10 in an over the hill Jones.

Jaysus, I'm having a serious problem picking 1 out of all those.

I think Darchinyan shouldn't be overlooked and Lopez has absolutely destroyed anyone unlucky enough to be in the ring with him this year.
Caballero has had a serious year also.

I know most will be looking at the big names, but those guys beat serious competition when being underdogs or at best what were believed to be 50/50 fights going in.

Have to give this more thought.

Keep the votes coming guys. Manny is the obvious choice There are a number of lesser known, less obvious fighters very worthy of the title indeed.

Some fighters may be seen in a different light. An example of this being JMM. He lost to Pacquiao and then went up to beat casamayor(who only has his linear title because of a dodgy decision). You could also say the JMM deserved to win the pac fight (i had him winning by a round ) beating the number one super feather in the world and then going to lightweight to take the linear title.

IMO you can make a strong argument for everyone on the list. All haver their pros and cons.

Dont forget to vote on the Irish Boxer of the year Poll which is running as well!!!

JMM is pure class but the only problem with what you said above is he lost to pac! His performance against Casamayor was excellent though.

    I voted 'other.'

    Bernard Dunne!:D

    Kidding, Pacman I suppose!

There are a lot of people who thought Pac got a gift decision against jmm. Since pac is the obvious choice for fighter of the year i figured many people would give jmm the nod as in their eyes he beat the number on at super feather and lightweight in one year whereas pac didnt beat the number one is any division.

Personally I thought jmm won that fight by a round but alot of rounds were close in fairness.

Same could be said for B-hop. Im sure he would have gotten many more votes if the Calzaghe fight was a sd in his favour. Most people think so.

Sorry dude, you have to go with Dunne as pacman doesnt qualify as 'other':eek: :D:D:D

lol, so just to be clear... you voted other a few days back and went with katie taylor. as this is a pro only poll you've now went with pacman. so when the poll is over i just add one more to pacs total.

    Cheers

IMO people wanted JMM to win as he deserved a big win against a top name. It was a close fight and could have gone either way, for me Pac just edged it. It's a shame he didnt win because these guys look like there will take over the lightweight division and a third and final deciding fight there would have be great!

And that my feathered friend is because there are no golfers in the list.

But as you bring it up, i sporting terms I don't think any boxer has equaled Harrington this past year, maybe if PAC goes on to school a legit welter, we could talk. :p
