Slow read speeds from laptop dvd drive

it's taking approx 1 hour to copy over 8gbs of photo's from a dual layer disc and half that from a standard dvd. Which is an incredibly long time.

Drive is a HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T10N ATA DEVICE

running this in vista sp1 so maybe i need a fw update ?

Edit: I should add the real annoyance here is the stuttering in regular dvd playback

If you know the files are COMPLETELY safe, it might help and speed up things if you turn off/temp' disable firewalls and anti-virus checkers.
Norton's alone is notorious for slowing down file transfers for example.

That would make sense. I'll do a benchmark the next time i feel up to it. Check back shortly

Sluttering is usually caused by having more than one AV, by using Nortons or McAfee, or by not having enough RAM to run the DVD at full screen. Try running the DVD using VLC Player, as it usually runs better than Media Player.

Read the OP's edit. The two problems may have a common cause.

Check the DMA again in the IDE drives (I'm not sure how to get to it in Vista but in XP you just go control panel>system>hardware>device manager>ide ata/atapi controllers

look at the properties of each IDE drive and go to advanced settings, it should say "current transfer mode" or similar and this will be greyed out and is set to whatever it is. I've a feeling it might say POI mode for in one of them, if it does, right click the IDE drive (probably primary 1 or 2?) and uninstall, then just reboot and it will install it again and should hopefully fix the problem as it will go from POI to DMA.

It will switch back to POI if you put a badly scratched CD into the drive and it gives reading errors

What type of laptop acctually ? Check the Manufactuers website, i had this problem with a HP Compaq NC6120 once uppon a time, turned out to be a buggy firmware.
