St. Stephen's Day is Christmas Day Number 2. Relatives may come over again, eat the same massive dinner which is normally even nicer than on Christmas Day, eat the same amount of crap chocolate, drink the same amount of drink and watch the same crap TV ... then possibly go out tomorrow night.

Why do so many Irish people call it "St Stephens's Day"? The guy was called St Stephen, not St Stephens.

It's all due to the impact on the Irish psyche of one Shakin "Stevens" and his trademark warbling on "Merry Christmas Everyone" - which reached number 1 back in Xmas 1985.

That's not what I'm asking. I'm wondering why a lot of Irish people pronounce "St Stephen's Day" as "St Stephens's Day".

Yeah, so St. Stephen -> St. Stephen's Day NOT St. Stephens's Day

That's one of those ambiguous ones. But I'm talking more about pronunciation here.

    That's 'girls' plural.

So 'Girls' College' instead of 'Girls's College'.

But there is only one Stephen implied in 'St. Stephen's Day'.

    :)

Anyway, today will be turkey sandwiches and a turkey dinner that will be better than yesterday, followed by loads of chocolate and crisps, and then a night out with my friends.

I think I'm mad going out tonight.
