I'm looking to get an effects board like the ones mentioned above. I know there's bigger ones the GT's and bigger line 6 ones but I'm looking for a smaller and simpler unit.

Just wondering has anyone got any recommendations for one? I'd like to have sounds to play most things but a decent metal tone is important for me.

So any opinions or recommendations are welcome.

We think that the Line 6 XT & X3 Live are much better than the Boss efforts.
Someone might stick up for the Boss units, but the Line 6 XT Live was the business and available for around €300 with a bit of shopping around online.

If you can't get the sound you are looking for on this, you are pressing the wrong buttons. The Boss GT8 was a dud, and Boss quickly brought out the GT10. Though the Line 6 is the business.

You can even patch it straight into the desk when gigging live. All you need is a good monitor to hear yourself.

    Yep!

Well I guess 3 years is the minimum you could reasonably leave it but I still think that's a little misleading. I have a GT8 and love it but it does take some time to get set up right. As far as I can tell the biggest improvement in going to the 10 is that it sounds better straight out of the box (better presets) and has a looper and USB with only a small improvement in the raw tones.
But yeah, I've heard that Line 6 are better for metal so they might suit you better. It's a personal choice - go to a store and try them out.

I've a GT8 and there was a definate learning curve with it. I find it hard to get a very convincing death metal sound from it but it covers most other bases pretty well.
I know people with the me50 and they swear by it. I've used one and it is kind of like a GT8 but with less options on it.

I actually quite like the ME50.
The presets are sh*te IMO, the wah is apalling and the whole programming thing is a load of my arse but it also has a lot going for it.
Personally I find the tuner, (reasonably good) compressor, OD 2 (level =10, tone = 5, gain = 0), noise gate, chorus and delay to be very handy for gigging instead of having sperate pedals for each. It's worth the money for that alone IMO.
It's also kinda fun for nosensical tomfoolery at home that you would never do in a band situation, like the harmoniser. Tell the truth; (of the people that have a multi FX) who hasn't flipped on the harmonizer and done The Final Countdown solo? Or if you haven't already done it who didn't immediatley think of going straight home to try it? :pac:

Are you referring to yourself in the plural now? :pac:

    What?!

The Boss GT8 wasn't a dud, it was/is extremely highly regarded. The XT Live had it pipped in terms of amp models, and the GT8 had the edge in terms of effects quality, and routing/tweaking capabilities. It also has extremely solid build quality/reliability, which is more than can be said for the X3 Live unfortunately.

It wasn't 'quickly replaced' by the GT10, it was their top-line model for a little over 3 years.

Thanks for the replies all. I guess I should just go in and have a look at both.

Just wanted to see whether there were any to stay away from and hear a few opinions.

I am now we......not just a me anymore. :pac:

I could be wrong, and please correct me (we) if that is the case, but most people on here over the past couple of years have sided with the POD XT Live. Infact a lot of people have said that the GT-8 was not as good as the Line 6 efforts. Now some people will have already clicked on the REPLY button to disagree........

    Basically.......Boss are b*ll*x.
