Best fry-up in Dublin

I'm going to be spending a couple of weeks in Dublin at the beginning of February. Although I am a native Dubliner, I haven't spent much time in the city in recent years, so I'm a little out of touch with the best locations for a good fry-up.

    I'd welcome the board's views.

Hobart's - Ranelagh or There's also a small Diner across from the Matter that had nice food last time I was there!

Gerard's on the end of Lower Leeson street is phonomenal! Pretty pricey, but worth every penney! They butter the bread with pudding!! I'm starving thinking about them!

Rick's on the corner of George & Dame street apparently has amazing breakfast rolls, although I've never tried them..

For the Best ever home made fry up, go with either Superquinn, especially for sausages! Tesco's Finest is pretty tastey too!

Here's a fantastic place for you, James St, there's a tiny little place called The Royal Kitchen... €8.50 gets you a fry falling off your plate - 2 sausages, 2 rashers, 2 eggs, pudding, toast, beans, mushrooms, chips, a big pot of tea and a glass of orange juice.

Well worth a checking out. Getting hungry now thinking about it :D

Brendan's Coffee Shop on Mary Lane - small, medium and large breakfasts. Don't go for the large unless you're really hungry! I usually go for the 'medium' which is larger than the 'full Irish' you'll get in more salubrious surroundings. If you're up and about early, it's ideal as it opens at 6am.

(Mary's lane is off Capel Street beside the DCC Fruit and Vegetable Market).

if you're out Swords way check out the Applewood cafe, best cafe I've been in in a long time, their breakfasts or breakfast baps are fantastic! Haven't been able to have one the last two months though, overdid it so on an enforced choestrol free diet for 12 weeks dammit! :(

Hi, The Court in Blessington has a savage fry up. The builder's breakfast is what you would expect, chips, lamb chop and then all the typical pig bits. Might be a bit of a trek from town though. We used to go there the odd saturday morning after training and glaze all our hard work from that morning!:o They also give you as much tea or coffee as you wish but i suppose you only will want one mug and leave half the second!. Actually not sure if they give you the lamb chop anymore? but i havent been there in two years.:(

There's a small shop, with a yellow front on Townsend Street, to the North of Trinity College. Does a lovely breakfast roll. Cooked there and then, so ensure you have 5 or 10 minutes. Food is top notch. See picture for details.

    Eh, no.

Was there yesterday with Mrs.DW as Cafe Sofia is still closed for the holidays.

I can't stand cafès that use a Bains-en-Marie and big lights to keep stuff 'hot', all it does is manage to dry items out and leave them at best, lukewarm.

Worse than that is the chance interfacing with the homeless and mentally-ill in the shared seating area of the food hall in the St.Stephen's Green Centre. Yesterday, we had to put up with a guy who was the double of 'Big Ron', the late-extra from Eastenders, who insisted on taking out a battery powered radio, putting it on his table and listening to loud music. Happy with this, he then proceeded to shout out random items of cutlery to the bemused Lithuanian who was bussing tables nearby....FORK! FORK! SPOON! KNIFE!...you get the picture.

If that wasn't bad enough, some random bag lady proceeded to sit next to us and take out and unfold and fold pieces of tissue paper from various bags she was carrying.

Jeeze, you should probably stay at home if you don't like seeing homeless people and mentally ill people trying to get some breakfast. Flippin Nora.....

Gerry's. Tis on the street that links Harcourt and Wexford St.

It's like being in a big country kitchen. No airs and graces, but a damn fine feed. I think for €8 you get 4 rashers, 4 sausages, 3 pudding, 2 eggs, beans, fried tomato, fried mushrooms, and all the tea and toast you can eat. Service is great, and they have it out to you in under 5 mins.

    Om nyom nyom nyom!

sorry, not in city centre (or city for that matter) but if you're ever passing through dunshaughlin, don't pass fidelma's on the main street without going in and helping yourself to a large breakfast. without a doubt the bestist, biggest, cheapest breakfast you'll ever have and the staff are always very friendly too.

    (not open sundays unfortunately :()

OT but nice to see Big Ron get a mention. He used to be a regular in the bar I worked in, in Edgware Middlesex back in the eighties. Diamond geezer he wuz too mate..

Back on topic "The Woodstock" at Doyles corner in Phibsboro does a good fry . Good frys are not that hard to find in Dublin tbh. Ye don't have to be Gordon Ramsay to cook rashers and sausages now do you..? :)

Depends what way you like your fry, some heated crap from under a light or some nicely freshly cooked food.;)

In that case I'd definitely recommend The Woodstock Phibsboro, conveniently located in the shadow of Dalymount, home of the best football team in Dublin:D

Yes, you're probably right (as the market opens at 5am). It's usually after 6 before I manage to get there.

Work in the area myself, and am partial to some Woodstock grub! Having said that though, its generally best if you get in early in the mornings.

Their downfall is that their food is all pre-cooked and left sitting in big metal trays on a buffet-style 'hot counter'. I much prefer ordering food and then having it cooked. Don't mind waiting 10 minutes if its gonna be that bit fresher & nicer!

There's a place called 'Brew' in Glasnevin (Across the road from the MET Office) and they do nice food. I have only been there once or twice and unfortunatly they don't seem to open on weekends anymore!

Sorry to go completely off topic, but did people come up to him and do his classic line as Mr.Knuckles from Five Go Mad in Dorset? - "blah...blah...blah...secret plans...blah...blah...blah...nuclear weapons"

I'm talking about 1986 here..Eastenders was only on our TVs about a year so Ron was relatively unknown..he probably hadn't played Mr Knuckes at that stage. The pub was The White Lion on Burnt Oak Broadway, Edgware ...anyone know it ??

Don't open anytime Stevie, it closed down about a month ago..best in that neck of the woods is the restauraunnt in the Bots, bit pricey at €10 but it's an oasis of tranquility in the hustle and bustle of the city. (look at me gettin all poetic)

Theres a place in Malahide, real haven from the boutique shops and the starbucks! Cant remember the name of it but its in one of the units underneath the supervalue- really tasty hearty brekkie...hmmmm!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 995 ✭✭✭Ass

    Cafe sofia on Camden street
That place is terrible. Their student brekfast costs €6 and you get an tiny egg, about 4 chips, toast, two cocktail sausages, two rashers and maybe some beans.

It's not worth the money at all.

You're better off going to the canteen in DIT on Kevin St. The breakfast in there is delish, and it's not too expensive either.

Plenty of food for thought here:)

(As the person who started this, I am very grateful for the suggestions, and I can't wait for my February fry-up in Dublin. But please don't let my gratitude get in the way of a continued discussion of the best locations for this fix.:))

Is that the one that is a couple of doors down from the corner of Wexford Street and is kitted out like some ol' dears living room? If it is the place I am thinking off the tucker there is business.

Theres another place around the corner (not sure its still there) but used to be at the intersection of Wexford Street and Kevin Street. It was next door to a motorbike store as far as I can remember. They did a man sized fry up for a couple of quid back in the day.
