Anti-pregnant women labels on beer

Just came back from the off-license, and noticed that the European beer that I had bought to try (Tyn....something, I'll check later) has a little symbol of a pregnant lady drinking with a red line through it (like a no dogs allowed sign), at the bottom beside the percentage.
I hadn't noticed this before, but I think it's a nice gesture, and a good idea. It's a nice reminder to pregant women to be careful not to damage their baby, and spreads the message that pregnant women should not drink.

Thats the part that stands out the most to me. You must get all the girls, with lines like that.
OT, It's probably for the best. Don't want to be sued coz some dozy pregnant ho drank your beer and blames you for any problems with the kid.

Why? Shouldn't women have the choice to drink an odd beer now and again while pregnant? That labeling is dumb.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,255 ✭✭✭✭The_Minister

    :D
    Thats not what I meant.
It's also used to ban rollerskates too.

Because it can damage the foetus.

Which the mother carries, hence her choice. That labeling is too PC. I'm not saying over do it but an odd beer won't kill a baby. There's worse crap out there.

It's not saying that she can't have it, it's just reminding her of the possible consequences of her actions.

And, I know it won't kill the baby, but it could damage it.

I know what you mean, why not have "not for kids/recovering alcoholics/drivers/gaurds on duty/pilots in flight" stickers too? Can't we have some common sense, or will we end up like the US military, which puts "Do Not Eat" on fecking everything.

Pregnant women don't need reminding. They'll hear enough from doctors. Women will choose to drink or not, labelling wont make a difference.

SMOKING KILLS labelling doesn't make me stop.

Yeah well, I don't need to be told that kids shouldn't drink bleach but its there anyway

Remember that some pregnant women are inconsiderate of their babies health and drink, smoke and do drugs amongst other things so need reminding and short of knocking on their doors this will have to do.

I think any one who smokes or drinks while pregnant should be locked up for the duration of the pregnacy, it is nine months out of you life. If the baby is damaged in any way, either mentally or phsycially, then they have to live with it for the rest of their lives.

    Or y'know... dump it.

Its a good thing even if it only re-enforces the truth that drinking whilst pregnant is evil.

I must also add that women who drink any alcohol during pregnancy don't care about their baby.

Maybe it's saying don't drink too much of our beer or this will happen?

I heard if a woman drinks while pregnant she'll turn her foetus gay or catholic - 50/50 chance

the womans choice should be weather or not she is going to have a baby. not weather or not she is going to do whatever she likes while she is pregnant and **** the consequences

legalise abortion then make it illegal for pregnant women to drink

health service costs will drop, birth rate will drop, crime will drop, unwanted and mistreated(from conception) babies will dissapear and we will live in a utopian dream of a country the envy of the rest of the universe

Interesting... should have it on all the beer here.

Women who drink and smoke while pregnant make my blood boil.

For ****'s sake, this nanny state crap bedamned. It's not the state's place to get involved in this level of people's lives. Let people make mistakes.

Are you sure it was a pregnant woman, and not some symbol meaning "Fat wimmins shouldnt drink this - choose light beer" ?

One beer every so often is good for you.

People are too careful about everything these days.

When the super flu hits, all you really careful people will be the worst hit.
We're also going to end up with a generation of kids with no immune systems.

Its them drunken women who cant cook.

I think Womens Aid should run cookery courses for women coming up to Christmas. It would be money well spent. I would support that campaign.

First thing I thought of when I saw this thread...

A small amount of alcohol in low concentrations is probably not that bad...
The problem is that a small amount one person's mind can be totally different to what another might think of as small...
And some people seem incapable of having one drink, 'cause lets face it ... the point of alcohol is to get plastered

The best plan is to tell women who are up the poll to avoid alcohol totally, because if you said X pints/units spread over week was ok then some brilliant character would do the maths, "save up their units" and get totally trashed every three weeks and then sue you when the baby turns out pickled.

interesting that modern society has a problem with pregnant mothers drinking/smoking due to potential damage to the foetus and yet has no problem with giving them the choice to terminate the foetus with a vacuum device or by saline poisoning. i'm not pro or anti btw.

hilarious that people have a problem with pregnant mothers drinking/smoking due to potential damage to the foetus and yet have no problem with them terminating the foetus' life with a vacuum device or by saline poisoning. i'm not pro or anti btw.

I believe the point is that if you don't have enough respect for the child to go 9months without major drinking/smoking then you shouldn't have it

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 634 ✭✭✭nomorebadtown

    yep thats probably fair reasoning

I thought the label was to remind me that if I drink too much of that particular beer some bird (the OPs ma) may end up up duff, and it is the beer companies way of showing that they will not accept responsibility for the little sprog when you realise the ma is a bit of a munter

Except Drinking alcohol has nothing to do with the immune system, sure kids today are too protected from dirt but a woman having a drink when she's pregnant can damage the foetus and does nothing to ready the child's immune system.
