Connecting PS3 to my LG Monitor

    Hi guys,

I realise I've been bombarding this forum with queries for the past two days and I apologise for posting yet another thread! :o

Anyway, I was wondering if any of you were playing the PS3 on a standard LCD (PC) monitor?

You see, we have a crappy 20" conventional TV which really isn't doing justice to my shiny new PS3 and I have to sit with my nose touching the screen in order to see what's happening...

So I was thinking of hooking it up to my PC monitor which is a 20" LG L204WT-SF Flat Panel Display with DVI-D Input (not that I understand the difference between DVI-D, DVI-I and DVI-A...).

Could I do this by simply buying a HDMI to DVI cable?

    Thank you in advance! ;)

Yep but you'll need to hook up speakers for sound. Had a DVI adapater\HDMI cable for my old 27" samsung.

    Indeed! Forgot about sound...

Does the PS3 have a normal jack at the back of it so I can hook up my Sennheiser headset or 2.1 Sound System?

Powercity sell HDMI-DVI cables and you can get sound from the AV-MULTi cable that comes with the PS3
*You might need a phono-rca lead for your speakers ,with the av-multi* l45aj.jpg

So, let me get this right:

My monitor supports HDCP so a simple HDMI to DVI cable should enable me to play on my LG monitor.

However, I don't have anything to plug into the Digital Audio output... So I have to use the Audio feed from the composite cables (red & white) that are currently plugged into the Scart Adaptor. Is that correct?

So how do I connect my headset to these composite cables? Is that what the "phono-rca lead" will enable me to do?

Wait a second, just read here that I can connect my USB headset to the PS3 somehow?

My Sennheiser headset is a USB headset! Am I in luck?

So I simply plug it into the USB jack at the front of the console and it magically works? Does the PS3 have all the drivers for all the different USB headsets out there? I'm a bit suspicious of this now...

fyi i tried to link up my PS to the PC through the tv tuner card - not a good idea :)
was approx 1s lapse through the card.

    LOL! :D

    Good thinking mind you! ;)

No, I'll be doing it with the HDMI to DVI cable so it should be slightly better!

Most USB audio headsets are installed as standard USB composite audio devices in Windows anyway so it should work if the PS3 supports USB headsets as others noted.

Excellent! My headset worked straight away with Windows so I'm hoping it'll work with the PS3 too! I can't test it right now because my flatmate has her family over from Poland and they're all in the sitting room... Might give it a go when they head off to bed. If it works I'll pick up that HDMI to DVI cable tomorrow and happy days! PS3 in the bedroom! :D

Well guys, I finally managed to play around with my USB Headset on the PS3 and in the "Accessories Menu" (I think that's what it's called) I could see "Sennheiser USB Headset" and I could even set the microphone volume for Chat!

However, in the "Audio Menu", I could not set the USB Headset as the primary option for Sound Output. I could only choose 1) Digital Output 2) HDMI Only 3) HDMI + Composite (read & white).

Do you guys know how I can get the PS3 to use my USB Headset as the only Sound Device?

    Thank you in advance! ;)

Can't see that working stefanno ,you would need a patch at the least to route the sound through the usb bus.
Don't know what way the ps3 is designed ,but I'd say it could be done through some program though.
Don't think sony let other companies write stuff for the ps3:confused:

Why not try and buy cheap pc speakers ,that have an earphone socket aswell.
You could use the av-multi cable ,with the rca-phono cable to connect the speakers.

    Heres a set http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=222077

When I asked if I could use my USB Headset on the PS3, Clover answered "yes" but he probably meant for chatting only... :(

What a pity... I consider that a major design flaw!

What exactly is an RCA-Phono cable 311? Will it will enable me to take the sound from the Composite Audio Cables (white & red) and transform the signal into a 2.5mm jack? Is that what it does?

Yeah stefanno ,it's just a phono to earphone jack. If you are buying a lead get yourself a female phono to earphone jack ,save you buying a coupler to join the cables together.

Cool! At least now I understand how to get the sound working! :D

I'll go and get a Female Phono to Female 2.5mm Earphone Jack (if such a thing exists) or a Female Phono to Male 2.5mm Earphone Jack then a Female 2.5mm Earphone Jack to Female 2.5mm Earphone Jack in order to connect my 2.1 Speakers (these have a Male 2.5mm Earphone Jack connector).

It's messy but it should work! I just hope I'll find all these cables in the shops... :o

    It's not that messy ,

AVMULTI red and white phono -> Female phono-3.5MM Jack->Speakers

The 3.5mm jack is the standard connection on pc speakers. Make sure though they have an earphone out ,for that late gaming;)

Peats/Maplins are shops that sell this stuff ,other than that you can get them online anywhere.

Just spotted this connection which you could plug straight into the back of the speakers

I'm heading into town in a short while and I'll be going to both Peats and Maplins. I hope tat between the two of them they'll have all those cables I need! Is PC World any good for cables and such? Never set foot in there...

Oh yeah, and thanks for correcting me on the jack size there! It is indeed 3.5mm not 2.5mm...

No worries ,I wasn't been pedantic about the 2.5 ,it's usually used on nokia phones though ,just incase someone thinks your looking for something else.

You were right to mention it though! Could have been a very frustrating mistake to make after the effort I've put in to getting the PS3 working on my PC monitor! ;)

Anyway, went to Maplins and they had just closed... I was gutted. So I went to Peats and found everything I needed (HDMI to DVI cable - AV-MULTI red and white phono to Male 3.5mm Jack - Female to Female 3.5mm Jack) but it cost €40 EUR!

It physically hurt my testicles handing over all that cash for a few bits and bobs... :(

Anyway, the main thing is, the PS3 is now in my bedroom and everything is working perfectly! :D

Thanks again for all your help 311 and everyone else! ;)

Tsk tsk. Had you asked for me it would have cost you less, though maybe I shouldn't consider a discount.... after all you went to Maplins first! :)

Nice one ,I genuinely thought you needed speakers to amp the sound. Your headphones must have an inbuilt gain/volume on them.

If fairness at least peats stuff is better quality ,maplins can sell some ebay nastiness to people.

Happy chrimbo all ,I'm playin wipeout all night.

In my defense, Maplins is ALWAYS cheaper than Peats! But I'll remember to ask you first next time! :P

I connected my Creative 2.1 for the sound (didn't actually try plugging in the headset directly...). The Creative speakers have a Headset Jack so I'm all sorted now! :D

Might have to get a KVM DVI Switch though... It's a pain having to change the cables over all the time...
