Opinions on the Boss SD-1

I need something to goose my Marshall into high gain territory. I'm currently using the overdrive side of my Marshall Jackhammer but even at very low gain settings on the pedal it adds a kind of fizz to the tone that I don't like. It's bearable but I intend getting something else.

The amp is a Marshall Silver Jubilee with gain at around 3 o'clock, it's fairly beefy as is but I just need that little extra on top to make it a little extra crunchy. I'm using humbuckers.

The amp is based on a JCM 800 design from what I can gather and the SD-1 seems to be used quite a lot to boost an 800. What do you guys think of it?

BTW, I have no intention of paying a fortune for a boutique stomp box..Say keep suggestions under 100 yoyos?

    Hey, I'm also a JCM 800 user.
I found that the way to go it to use the Boss OD 1 or 2 with gain = 0/1, level = 9/10.
Distortion pedals (DS1) will always add fizz no matter how low you set the gain control. Even overdrive pedals aren't great sounding IMO but they're not bad to give you that little "mine goes to eleven" boost. :pac:
You'll see from my other posts that I've been tryng to come up ways to avoid using them altogether. To me OD pedals are like using condoms, they can still be great but you can't feeling that you missing something and it could be better!!

hoy there i have an sd-1, i bought it when i had been playing guitar for only 6 months and thought it was some sort of crazy hi-gain yoke. a few months later i realised what it could be used for and 6 years on its pretty much the most used pedal i have. used on a clean channel it just makes it dirty crunchy. I mostly use it with the overdriven channel though just to solo on or indulge is mush.
I was doin a gig recently and twas the only pedal i took with me, twas the only one i felt i needed.
All of the knobs have quite a wide range so it can be tweaked quite a bit.

    anyway good luck!
