How soon can you get accurate results on a home pregnancy test. I'm two weeks late and slightly worried. If I take a test will the result be pretty accurate now or should I wait?

They are normally pretty accurate almost immediately after having sex nowadays :D

They also come in packs of 2 so that you have a couple of days break between the 2 sets of results...go buy one!

ETA: Make sure you read the instruction leaflet carefully...there are other factors that can affect the results. It's been a long time since I did one so can't be more specific than that but I remember stuff about certain tablets you may be on etc possibly affecting the results at the time..

    Ok thanks.

I just don't really like the idea of doing one, it coming back negative, being relieved and then finding out later that it was actually wrong. Argh!

It should be pretty accurate 2 weeks after your period was due.

Do more than one a few days apart.

    Good luck.

after 2 weeks it should be about as accurate as its going to get really. Put your mind at ease either way and get yourself a reliable brandname. As one of the other posters mentioned they come in packs of 2 so this will more that likely give you a definite indication. Best of luck OP

Did the test and it's positive. I kinda knew myself it would be.

    ****, ****, bollocks etc etc.
Really wasn't planning or expecting this and have no idea what I'm doing to do. Feel like a completely selfish bitch because I know I have a way better situation than a million women do. I have a long term bf and we're very happy but we were planning on going to NZ in the next 12 months and travelling around a good bit. This is not in the plan.

If this was not the plan you should have used protection?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,852 ✭✭✭ncmc

Curleypinky, that kind of reply is not at all helpful to her. You know nothing about her situation, she could have used protection for all you know, they aren't 100% effective you know.

OP, I wish you the best of luck in making this decision.

Curlypinkie hardly helpful and for all we know she did use protection.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

If i could press report post in work - i would...

Bit harsh to be honest... i have friends who've used protection and still got pregnant...

OP I hope everything works out for you.. yes it might change your plans but you'll not regret a day of it either.. if you do decide to change plans then the money you've saved for trip might be handy for the preparations for the baby?..

Either that or tone down the hol... travel asia for 3-4 months instead of NZ for a year .. that way u get amazing hol and save a lot also...

Really hope it works out and best of luck... PS - Happy Xmas!

It amazes me how the automatic reaction of people when they find out about an unwanted pregnancy is "shoulda used protection". How do we know they didn't? Doesn't make the blindest bit of difference now anyway.

OP, I'm really sorry to hear that, it's a terrible time to find out too. Just consider all your options and tsalk this through with your partner before deciding anything, good luck!

Sorry all, a bit hungry, that's all.
TBH, if a girl uses the pill and the guys a condom, it's extremely rare to get pregnant, it's when people get careless about them, that those
    two fail.
OP, didn't mean to come across all rude, wish you luck.

    Edited to add:
You could still travel? It's not due for another 8 months still anyway. Loads of time! It's apparently (from what I've heard, not personal experience) Not all that hard to travel with an infant either. It will be adifferent sort of travelling though, you can't "rough it".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 506 ✭✭✭gowayouttadat

I have been on the pill for 7 years and have never had a scare of any kind. I haven't been careless with it. I wasn't on antibiotics at any stage over the last month and haven't been sick so tbh I really don't understand how this happened.

I have told my bf. He was there when I did the test. Think we're both in shock. I had to go back to work and his family are calling over later for xmas drinks (lovely!). We'll talk about it tomorrow and try make some decisions.

i know lots of people who have had unexpected ... very unexpected pregnancies.. not one of them would change how things have turned out. Might be the best thing ever. Best of luck anyways x

    Pregnancy tests CAN lie.

They can even give false positives.:mad::mad:

I know it is a bit of a shock, as you were not planning on becoming a mother, but congratulations! I can't believe all you are getting are condolences!

I can partly understand the horror, the thought of getting accidentally pregnant kinda makes me want to hide under my bed, but I do know a few women who had unplanned pregnacies, and are now deleriously happy.
(Actually one of them, is now incapable of comversation that is not about her wee sprog)

But I do hope you will feel better about it as time goes on :)

I think TBH this was quite a courageous thing to post since on boards there is a predictable reaction here.

However saying that, I wish the OP well. Whether she travels abroad or not she is on the start of a journey in one form or another. (hopefully a really happy one) :)

I know it wasn't what you had planned OP, but things could be much worse. This will make some changes to your plans but I think in years to come you will be very greatful for the new little lady/fella and as long as everyone is healthy and happy sure its fantastic news. I wish you both the very best of luck and a heartfelt congratulations is definately in order. You should avail of all the help you can get and simply reconsider your immediate plans.

    Congrats again ;)

The tests are pretty accurate, though when I was doing them I always did more than one a few days apart (being paranoid), I also did the one with the conception indicator! I know that having a baby is a bit of a shock but there is never a perfect time for a baby and it is a shock to find out you are pregnant even if it was planned!

Apart from that I agree with what ve said.

    Congrats.

Tests can be inaccurate- but are far more likely to give false negatives than false positives. For an accurate reading you should do it at least 2 weeks after your period is due- and in the morning, rather than the evening (your hormone levels are far higher in the morning than the evening).

The very best of good luck to you, no matter what the outcome is, or what you decide to do.

    Best wishes,

    SMcCarrick

Thanks everyone. Not getting my head around it at all. Hopefully I will soon.

    What's a conception indicator?

a conception indicator tells you how long ago you concieved _ the way i looked at it it was another test of hormone levels and could not do any harm> i know that it is a shock but hopefully you will get used to it soon> best wishes!

true, but pretty much all of them do say 99% accurate on the box and in the adverts.

Same thing happened to me recently and I really recommend giving a call to one of the Well Woman centres. They do free crisis pregnancy counselling and go through all the options with you. The woman I talked to was very nice and didn't try to pressure me just was supportive and provided the info so I could actually make an informed decision myself.

    ---
Also I'd keep in mind that people who went through with unplanned pregnancy and at the end weren't actually happy, aren't going to write here.
It is such a deeply personal and not usually very well received by people thing that people who didn't have rosy happy stories aren't going to post on boards.

Please don't make any rush decisions and hopefully your bf is supportive :-)

pm me if you like and hope everything goes well for you.

Tricky thing about having kids is that it is one of the very small number of things in life you can't just try and then give up if you didn't like it.

It is only fair that you need to know if you really want this or not. The decision is only yours so don't feel pressured by both positive and negative comments.

    Which brands have them?

I might do another one with one of those. I have no idea how far gone I am or anything.

False positives are massively rare, and in most cases occur as a result of user error. A positive pregnancy test will show your whether or not the pregnancy hormone hCG is present. A chemical pregnancy (very rare) can result in a false positive. People can sometimes read evaporation lines as a positive result, or they can leave a test standing too long before its read etc.
People on infertility treatments may sometimes get false positives (usually due to testing before infertility drugs have left the system), but honest to God, they are very, very, very rare.

False negatives are way more common, and usually occur because people test too early.

    Hi OP,

The pregnancy test that has the conception indicator is the Clearblue digital - all of the new ones of these can tell you roughly how many weeks you are. The most accurate way of determining gestation though is a scan at your local hospital.

Your next step is to get yourself to a GP and make a booking visit with your local maternity hospital.

    Best of luck!

Boots have at least 2 different ones which indicate how long you have been pregnant (the normal way of measuring is from the date of your last period- but these measure hormone levels from actual date of conception- and will consequently be ~ 2 weeks different from what a GP will tell you).

Its a digital conception indicator that you are looking for- as opposed to a pregnancy test btw.

Just wanted to say - the new Clearblue Digital test is both a pregnancy test and a conception indicator. The screen will display either "Not Pregnant" or "Pregnant" with numbers eg. "Pregnant 2-3" indicating that you are 2-3 weeks pregnant etc.
