5.1 speaker help!

I'm looking at buying either Logitech-X540s, Creative Inspire T6200s or Sony SRS-D511s. Basically a cheap set of 5.1 speakers for mixed use - music, games & movies hooked up to PC, DVD player and Xbox 360. I notice that none of these have digital inputs, just 3 analog inputs for front + rear + centre. They do "upmix" to surround from stereo.

Is this mode (upmixing) a pale imitation of true surround sound?

Do you know of any speakers in this price range which take a digital input from an Xbox or DVD player for true 5.1 sound?
