WinTV-HVR-900-HD but MPEG4 missing

I bought the above at a FNAC at 79 euros in Paris last week on the basis of receiving the FOUR on a PC in MPEG4. it includes the really old fashioned twentieth century analogue service.

Every tv shop you go to in Paris has rows and rows of TNT-HD 1060 to allow viewers to watch their HD (free) programmes on MPEG4. The odd tv set without a sign is an MPEG2 that allows customers to watch their free 18 channels as before. Shops will do a deal to get rid of these HD ready/enabled obsolete tv sets.....

But tell me why my stick (made in Ireland) won't recognise the fact that the Irish service is in MPEG4...

And another question when Boxer (or whatever name they choose) launches how will I be able to avail of the pay service -there's no provision for a card- should I opt for it?

If its this one, then its only an onboard hardware mpeg2 decoder.

    http://www.hauppauge.co.uk/site/products/data_hvr900.html

But apparently you dont need it, you can do the mpge4 decoding with software. Depending on your viewing software (say dvbviewer) you can specify in the mpeg4 done with software such are coreavc or the poweredvd mpeg4 decoders.

I'm not sure about the hauppague and a card slot, but I know some of the terratec cards some with ci modules so you can put in a card. Not sure if you can get some generic usb connected device to allow a card

No it would appear different as the 'magic' letters HD are not mentioned and would not be understood in the U.K. context. But thanks for your comments.

Would anyone hazard a guess if the supplied CDs incorporate the necessary software to allow the stick to differentiate between a transmission coming in in MPEG2 or MPEG4 or is it the stick itself that does it?

When you say "the magic letters HD are not mentioned", do you mean that they are not mentioned on the box that your USB stick came in?
There are two versions of this stick - one MPEG2 and the other MPEG4, the difference being presumably in the software on the CD. Did you install this? It's not likely that the hardware is decoding the MPEG stream - this is done on the PC for this type of product.

You need to install a Mpeg4 H264 codec on your PC. The decoding is done by software. i would be very suprised if they packaged the MPEG4 codec with it.

You need Core AVC or the one that comes with Cyberlink PowerDVD. Think the second one is free or at least the codec remains free after the trial ends.

Another codec, FFshow will not work.

Just to add more to the same., you need the the codec mentioned by STB and a "player" that let you choose what decoder to use.

I had exactly the same issue as you and CoreAVC + DVBViewer made it.

A USB or serial port ISO card reader may work if the application you use supports it and you have a "softCAM". It's been done with satellite receiver cards and Sky Card. Which isn't for the beginner.:)

I uninstalled everything I had put on my laptop from the two supplied cds and having checked the Hauppauge webpage I found specific reference to my purchase and followed the four clear steps as instructed and by no magic started scanning and MPEG4 worked fine......

I did note that in order to scan the analogue service the device went into 'scan cable' mode so the four channels (or more?) appeared with verying reception quality on sixteen different channels (frequencies) Some of these may be leaks from UPC cable but were not viewable. Were these all in VHF?

On the normal analogue (through the air) only RTE1 and Network 2 (sic) were available. Were these exclusively in UHF?

On digital all four tv channels (with pictures) and four radio are coming in clearly. Of course, if one channel is clear then all are clear.
The factory rivets channel -back on again- is on Mux 61 if I am correct.

Excellent - always good to follow the instructions:D I read the references on the website also and it seemed that the MPEG4 software was supplied on the CD.

As regards your scanning - what are you using for an antenna (aerial)? You may well be picking up the VHF signals from the cable TV. If you are in south county Dublin, you are probably receiving the analogue off-air signals from 3 Rock, which are in the UHF bands. The main digital multiplex (Mux 1) is on UHF Channel 61 from 3 Rock. I am picking up this channel at low signal strength in Greystones (north Wicklow), but I can't resolve the digital channels. Other digital testing is going on locally, but I may be able to move my aerial slightly to improve my 3 Rock reception.:)

I am using the aerial supplied by the Department to us on the original test...facing 3 Rock from the Northside of Dublin,
May I differ with you on Mux 1 ....here it is on Channel 54 (RTE,TG4, TV3 and 4 radios) and 61( Mux 2?) has one channel on test

Apologies, you are absolutely right! I had been scanning using my Globalteq receiver and it had been "stalling" on CH61. Ch61 is MUX 3 of course. Today I got up on the ladder and on to the roof and swung the aerial away from my local relay transmitter and towards 3 Rock and oriented it for horizontal polarization and voila! - got RTE1, 2, TV3 and TG4 plus the radio channels on MUX1 and some digital loop of a component insertion machine on MUX 3. I think the channel was called R&S or some such.
Very impressed by the 7-day EPG..... someone now needs to market a combined Freesat / Irish DTT box with PVR and that would be the end of SKY for those of us with little or no interest in Premier League footie:)
