A few of us are heading over to play the old course around paddys day, we are flying into edinburgh and staying in st.andrews, what is the best way of getting around other tha n renting a car? Is there a good train service from edinburgh etc or how much would a taxi from edinburgh airport to st andrews cost?? Any help appreciated...

P.S ...Any suggestions of good places to stay in St Andrews without having to remortgage the gaff?

Edinburgh to St Andrews is a serious hike and guess it would cost a packet by taxi (£100-£200 maybe?).
We drove over a few years ago rather than flying. Overall it saved. Hotels in StAndrews pricey. We stayed in one 10 or 15 mins drive out of town on the way to Dundee. Half the price and with its own course and driving range (cant remember the name but it was home to a Scottish Golf Academy, or Youth Golf development or some such).

We stayed in Dundee, only 35 mins from St Andrews

We also stayed one nite at the Fore Golf hotel right across from St Andrews.- (big red brick one overlooking the course)

Our bedroom overlooked the clubhouse...amazing. It was £50 per nite.

Dont forget to get your name in for the draw for tee times. We also played the Jubliee Course and splashed out and Went to Kings Barns..

    Truely great week.....:)

    Enjoy

Our group hires a bus... it takes just over an hour from Edinburgh airport depending on traffic/rush hour.
We stay in 1 Golf Place and Greyfriars.
1 Golf Place is 100 yards from the 18th on the old course, Greyfriars is about 200 yards further away so both have great access to the courses.

We play the old, the new and the jubilee. They are all right beside each other.... the clubhouse is between the 1st tees for the new and the jubilee and is close to the 2nd hole on the old course so it's all easy walking distance (you can leave your gear/clubs in lockers here overnight for a nominal fee). There is also a range/practice facility near the 16th hole on the old so about 15 mins walk from the 1st tee of the old.

If you are only playing these 3 courses then you won't need a car by any means... everything is an easy walk...
