So I finally decided I've worked the brunette look long enough and I want to colour all my hair a nice shade of red/auburn (not just highlights- it's all or nothing!) If anyone saw Miss Naked Beauty a few weeks back- I thought the winner Shona's hair colour was gorge.

But I know nothing about getting my hair dyed, never done it before. I asked for a quote in Peter Mark today and they said it would be €135, which I would pay if it was done right. Just have a few questions, it would be great if anyone could help...

How do you make sure they give you the EXACT colour you want? Is it best to bring your own pics and stuff or do they have sample hair colours there? I don't wanna come out with some orange mess.

Is there anywhere better than Peter Mark to get hair coloured? I'm in Dublin, automatically went to them cos I get my hair cut there.

I was told that because I'm a "colour virgin" they'd have to do my roots and ends first then fill in the rest later or something? Does it have to be done this way?

Anyway sorry if I blethered on a bit but i really, REALLY don't wanna mess this up! Any tips/advice much appreciated! :-)

Does it have to be a city centre based salon? I can recommend somewhere in West Dublin if that suits?

house of colour ive found are in general the best. both times i went to peter marks they didnt do what i asked but regardless of who you get in house of colour theyve done an amazing job.

go with a picture of what you want so you get exactly what you're looking for

Just a little warning that this may have to be done in stages, which I think is what the person in Peter Marks was referring to. If you have dark hair and want a bright vibrant red colour put in its going to take time and might take a few applications before you get the desired tone of red.

They may want to strip the hair so that the red takes better, I really would'nt recommend this especially when you have'nt dyed your hair before. If you have soft natural hair then keep it that way. I'm not sayin dont dye it just dont kill it with an overload of unnecessary chemicals.

I'm sure any colorist worth their salt will tell you all this before touching your hair so please pay attention to what your told. If she says it cant be done in one application then maybe pick a colour in between your own and the one you want, just as a temporary colour. Then your final colour will take better when the hair has already been coloured the same tone.

    Hope that makes sense!

House of colour on wellington quay do great work! I highly recommend them.

Wherever you end up, do bring photos of colours and styles you like, it means the stylist is sure what you're going for...

I don't understand why they'd have to do your roots and ends first and the middle after. If your hair's never been dyed before surely there's no point, because all your hair will take to the dye the same way. Unless the ends are really damaged or something.

I always think it's a bit dodgy when they say they're doing things in stages, unless it's very intensive lightening. I've only had my hair dyed in a salon once, I usually do it myself, but that time I went in with never been dyed before, very dark brown hair and came out two hours later with bright red streaks in my hair.

Thanks for all the replies guys! Got it done there just after Christmas in peter mark, and I'm very happy with the result. I brought in pictures and was very clear about what I wanted and it all worked out. Much cheaper than I thought as well! :-)
