hi all, quick question, im currently in 1st yr as a mature student,i qualified for the mature students grant, which barely covers my rent.im living independantly from parents/spouse,have no children.
im wondering as the grant only covers 8months of the college year, wat are my entitlements for the summer months? will i be able to go on the dole/get rent allowance?
thanks for the info in advance!

You will only be entitled to Jobseekers Benefit if you have the contributions, otherwise you won't be entitled to anything.

If you had been drawing the dole previous to starting the course you would have been entitled to a lot of benefits.

True enough, it used to be 6 months and there were mature students who made sure they qualified before starting our course. There were looooads of stuff you could claim.

The period has been extended to 15 months now afaik.

You can try for job seekers allowance. But for non-mature students you always needed a letter that you had completed your course and you are a 1st year student so you don't have this.
I'm not well up on the mature student entitlements but your college has a student union or at a least some student welfare officer you can talk to.
There are thousands of students in your situation so someone in your college will have seen this many times before.
Makes enquries with your SU and if you feel uncomfortable about asking in a public office, phone in

So is it simply a case of no benefits for non-mature students over the summer?

btw OP.... most students get jobs over the summer. I know it's a little OT but why not try just getting a work experience placement for the summer?

i have been trying just about everwhere for the past month for a job but alas no go!

    follow on question:
does it matter where u apply for job seekers assistance?
im studying on the east coast, planning on heading west for the summer, do u have to be resident in a certain location for a certain period or anything?
