    Hi,

Has anyone tried this course? I'd be interested in something more than just the basics - more oversteer and drifting rather than how ABS works- its hard to tell from the description how far this actually goes..

We do a skid car car course in work, you wont be tought how to drift if you want to learn that do go to a drifting course. You will be tought all the basics of oversteer and understeer etc. Above all its so much fun but you can get a little seasick from all the spinning!

Is work the same place or somewhere else?

I presume Lightning is referring to Mondello which is where I did it a number of years ago. Great craic trying to keep the car in a straight line. Didn't do too badly myself and would love to try it again.

How much is the skid/control course in Mondello out of interest? Can't seem to find it on the website.

I'd like to do this too, sounds cool.

Do you use your own car or are there school cars that are used?

You normally use a school car which is a normal road car that has 4 shopping trolley like wheels mounted at each corner. These wheels can be raised or lowered individually. So you can raise the two rear wheels to simulate a complete loss of rear end grip. Or do the same to the front etc etc.

We use a VW Bora, I did have some videos but I cant seem to find them at the moment.
Brill thanks for that, saw something like that on the tv before

Yup I was referring to mondello, it is good fun and can be a good learning experience. Do you remember who was your instructor?
I honestly can't recall. It was about 5 years ago in one of the Rovers! I don't think it was someone from the Race School - he looked a bit too nerdy IIRC!

Just did the Leinster Driving Campus one today, I have to say it was fantastic and I'd highly recommend it for any driver. Mainly for the safety aspect, and that's the main aim of the course, but it is great fun too. It's broken into two parts, ABS control and the skid pan.

The ABS control part teaches you how to steer under ABS breaking from high speeds. The course consists of a long run up with cones at the end blocking the lane to simulate an obstacle and more cones to the right to simulate the right side of the road. Your breaking point is 10 meters in front of the obstacle, although it looks more like 10 feet, and when you approach at speed it looks more like 1 foot :) The idea is you approach the obstacle at 60, then 70 then 80kph, you can't break until you reach the breaking point and then you have to swerve to avoid the obstacle cones and back in to avoid the cones on the right. It isn't too bad at 60 but when you take it at 80 your gut is screaming at you to stop long before you reach the breaking point :) It's incredible what you can do with ABS and the control you can have when it's used right, and I'd recommend anyone do it just for this alone, it really could be a life saver.

The skid pan is a circular area with a special coating, and they throw some water on too to make it extra slippy, the instructor guides you onto it from different directions and simulates different types of skids and you have to try to compensate and regain control. I found this came much more naturally then the ABS, but it's a great way to learn the correct way to deal with the back stepping out and to instinctivley correct it. It's great fun too, I'd a huge grin on my face the whole time :)

The whole thing only lasts about 90mins, which is the only bad thing, I could have stayed there doing it all day :)

And slightly off topic, but they have a simulated road course there too with 2 miles of marked out road with hills, roundabouts, traffic lights, junctions etc for learner drivers which is a great idea. Far better than doing a few laps of a car parks before going straight onto real roads.

How much did you 90 mins cost? Was there much of a briefing outside the car or was it all learning in the car?

Friend of mine did this yesterday and said it was good craic and educational also. Cost him ninety-something euro.

Its a lot more expensive but If you really want to learn how to do all this get a few flights to silverstone for the Audi driving experience. Practice skid control etc in an S5, RS4 and TT. Once you pass this they let you drive a R8 around Rockinham :eek::eek:
