Sky's full pack is currently 47 pounds sterling in the UK - WHY the hell is it 66euros here???

Here clearly on my screen last night is a ridiculous price infraction - 1pound = 2euro!!!

Where do this shower get off?

Despite the closing of the gap between the euro and sterling, we are not seeing the price of goods sourced in the UK falling here. Sky is an even worse offender than the bricks and mortar shops as they can't hide behind the excuse of high wage costs, VAT rates etc in Ireland as they just beam the bloody satellite signal down here. I'm going the freesat route so I won't have to pay this shower a penny. If more people threatened to quit SKY over the exchange rate, then perhaps they'd reduce their prices in line with pricing in the UK but people here will just keep on handing the moola over blindly like the good sheep they are.

Totally agree with Dave, i have also walked away from Sky and have to say i dont miss it one bit!
Call them, complain and tell them you will cancel if they continue rip off.

Their cancellation department is somewhere in cork now - there as rude as hell! - nothing like the way they used to handle cancellations!

I remember you used to get through to scotland and a nice lady would talk your socks off until you stayed!

I told them about the sterling change and was told there's nothing I can do about that - I've accepted your cancellation - bye.

Well good luck to them! - More people should ring and cancel.

I don't agree with the 30cent a minute call rate either! If you want to get through quickly ring the 0818 719 819 number select 5 and then 3 then 3 again for cancellations!

Call centre is in Cork? well there's the trouble. Nasty obnoxious shower down there in the revolting county (they only changed it to rebel as they finally found out that although revolt is the same as rebel, revolting means something else entirely :D:D)

I'd love to see what Sky would do if a massive number of Irish subscribers cancelled. Everyone knows that its easy to rejoin anyway, just give the wife's name and you'll get a new deal as well that you won't get as an existing customer.

I've cancelled today siting the sterling price as my reason for cancelling- so has my parents and my neighbour - If we all band together maybe we can get some reaction! - I sent a letter to indo about it as well.

Its about time we stood up against these blatent rip offs!

When the free box came out here first they jacked up the price from 30 punts to 50 siting that they could "no longer carry" the difference.

I don't remember the irish - english currency ever being at skys advertised rate of 2euro to the pound!

If i do subscribe again it will be from an english address - there's more channels on their cards anyway with bbc hd and ch4 hd!

i emailed them last week and asked why the price is not coming down. surprise surprise no reply yet. Its an absolute scandal and sky know it is but choose not to do anything about it.
take multi-room its now 14.75 with the uk vat reduction. at current rates it should be more like 11.75!

anyone tried getting a td to put down a parlimentary question to the minister for communications or someone to see what they say? even if they do come back with the spiel about it being a uk company at least the issue would be brought to their attention.

A few years ago, it was the other way around.

In fairness though, if stg Vs Euro reaches parity, Sky will really have to reassess their pricing structure. Or use the extra revenue to add other channels to EPG like ITV2,3, BBC3, etc.

Of course, they could just say prices are based on what the market can bear, but it seems the market can't bear their prices any longer!

Those boxes are not just dodgy, they are actually illegal.

Anyhow, your days are numbered as UPC are updating their encryption system in January and all of their customers will be sent new cards and then all the dodgy boxes, including yours, will not work anymore.

Yes its rediculous what sky are charging. Im not sure what i will do when my UHF analouge (Deflector) gets turned off which i assume will be soon (A lot around Mayo have been swithced off allready), I will loose my Irish stations then. I cant seem to pick up these on a VHF signal (There is one but its so bad). I may have to go without RTE, TV3 etc as there is no way on earth I will be paying SKY 20e a month just so i can get them. I have Freesat stbs in most rooms so im covered for all the BBC's, ITV's, Four channels. Its just the Irish channels that will be the looser. Does the government/RTE realise that their national stations are actually being viewed by less and less of the public now because of the shut offs of deflectors and people cannot physically recieve them. That then brings my argument in paying for a IRISH TV LICENCE when you cant even recieve those channels.
The government really need to step in and sort this mess out regarding Skys pricing structure and the fact Irish TV is not available FTA/FTV for IRISH People.

Is there a schedule for this switchoff? I use the deflector for backup when I have satellite viewing issues which between one reason or another happens from time to time. Also, use it in all the other rooms in the house...

Well, what you have to say is significant. This is why people must pressurise RTÉ into at least allowing people with a cancelled Sky sub to continue to watch the Irish TV channels for free. The technology exists to allow this to happen. All that is needed is for RTÉ to act on this. Allowing FTV access to the Irish channels for existing Irish Sky viewers would not compromise the viewing rights of sports and imported programmes in any way.

To be honest mate it can be switched off at anytime. A lot of the time its down to cost and people not paying for it. I have to admit, Why should i pay 75e a year for a service I already pay for via my tv licence? Im not interested in the BBC, UTV transmission from the deflector but just the Irish channels which ive already paid for.
I know of 2 deflectors that were turned off recently, i think one served achil and newport and another one up the north of mayo.

No, it's not stealing, it's a PLC taking advantage of the current market conditions. It's normally up to customers to bring such companies to heal in an open market. And it really annoys me too. I've complained, have you?

Yeah and you know why that price went down?
Sky subscriptions in the UK and Ireland are subject to UK VAT... yes UK VAT so that price drop didnt come out of skys pocket at all :mad::mad:
They're making as much as ever and an awfull lot more from their irish customers!

I left them over a year and a half ago and I'm still getting their "deals" in the post. I've rung them twice now to tell them I'll never rejoin them and why (i.e. their rip off euro pricing) but they keep on including me in their mailshot. This being Ireland, a lot of people will bitch and moan about SKY's pricing but they'll keep on paying Rupert and Co.

Exactly. Freesat or the upcoming DTT platform is good for FTA channels, but if you want to use channels only available on subscription and 99.9% of HD, you have no alternative.

Correct me if I am wrong,but I thought the upcoming Irish DTT system would only have the "Big Four" channels Free of charge, RTE 1,RTE2,TV3 and TG4. Any few extra channels even BBC would be subject to a monthly fee??

Proposal is also that apart from RTE 1,RTE2,TV3 and TG4 there will be new free channels:
Irish Film channel
Oireachtas TV
RTE +1
RTE News
RTE 3
RTE HD

but i really can't see RTE introducing all these new channels.

I had SKY for years (no alternative cos I live in the sticks) and 90% of their channels were crap of the highest order. I ended up just watching Discovery and RTE1 and since I cancelled my subscription, I haven't missed SKY one bit.

I'm going the freesat route so I'll have access to BBC and Channel 4 and when DTT kicks off, I'll get the terrestrial stations back as well. SKY can keep their 200 channels of rubbish and I'll keep the €700 per year that I was paying them. Oh and take into account that my proposed freesat set up costs €300, then it will have paid for itself in about 5 months.

Correct. So to get digital RTE /TV3 / TG 4 FTA and the UK digital channels plus others FTA, you can get a Freesat box, and the upcoming Irish DTT box.

They're currently offering Sports + Movies for €20 for a month, but having subscribed I'm fairly disappointed.....the "sport" last night was cricket :mad: :rolleyes: and golf

Ah well, I've the cancellation date put into my phone. Annoying that I have to ring THEM to cancel a "30 day offer", but I'll chalk it down to experience.

Might cancel the whole thing then and just run with terrestrial + freesat.

I am currently on the Sky Sports and 6 mix entertainment pack with Sky €61pm, however I am a bit pissed off of late with the way the Sterling rate has been going, the same package is £36 or €39 p/m. I decided to ring Sky and told them that i was fed up with this blatant rip off and I wanted to cancel my current package with them, and straight away I was offer a 20% discount on my package for the next 12 months. The guy said that there is a price decrease coming in Jan, wait for it, a massive €1 been knocked off my package. He said this was to coincide with the 2% vat reduction in the UK.

The downside of taking the 20% discount is I would have to sign up for another 12 month contract and if I changed my package in the 12 months, I would lose my discount. So after one phone call, I went from paying €61p/m down to €48p/m. Still over the odds, but its something I guess.

So answer me so, how does one get to watch premiership football without subscribing to Sky or setanta. I am not complaining about paying for Sky I actually think they provide a decent service and the Sky+ is an excellent piece of equipment, but what I was complaining about was been ripped off by them.

some guy in cork who didnt know much told you that.
With the euro heading for parity,we'll soon be paying near double for sky than in the uk.

Also that uk vat reduction was from december 1st so what you got was an admission that sky held onto a whole month of that from their irish sky subscribers all 500,000 of them.
Yes thats half a million extra profit for them on top of the rip off benefit they are getting from the exchange rate.

Of course us Irish will just lie down and take it as usual:rolleyes:

sky dont really care... as long as they have 500,000 fools willing to pay up to 69.50 plus 14.75 euro for multi room then they dont have to reduce the price to match the exchange rate. and they dont reply to any emails about it...ps UPC havent reduced price either. dont forget 99% of their channel line up is uk based so they pay the channel owners such as bbc in sterling....

What I can't understand is why do people still lust after SKY???? I had it for about 2 years but finally copped that all I watched was the terrestrial channels and discovery. The rest of their programming was complete crap. Now I'm not a sports fan so SKY sports isn't my lifeblood, and if I want to watch a movie I go to xtravision so I don't need their movie channels either.

There is nothing on SKY worth paying hundreds of euro a year to watch. A FTA box will get you the decent channels (bbc, channel 4 etc) and dtt is coming next year so you can get the terrestrial stations as well (although you should be able to get them as a right seeing as you're forced to pay a tv licence).

I suppose in the celitic tiger era, fools and their money etc etc but perhaps now with times a changin, people will review their spending priorities and see that paying good money for SKY is like blowing hundreds on a haircut, nice to have but do you really need it??????
