In Autotune we trust. The rock-tinged Hot Revolver from his next mixtape

So what about this trend, a genuine attempt for established artists to shake up the game/stroke their ego or a worrying trend for the state of hip hop?

I think he done it on Carter III already before kanye, one of the singles was all vocoder....is kanye biting Wayne?

T-Pain was a rapper before he started singing so he has sort of set the trend. It's not as if autotune is something new though, Roger Troutman was using it for years.

that was a talk box, not the same thing

Actually it was a vocoder, but for all intents and purposes the way these guys are using autotune is to replicate a vocoder.

I was a big Kanye fan before he latest album. I cant listen to his crap now, whats worse, i was at my mates house the other day and his little sister who is 12 was blaring "Heartless" out of her ipod. I told her to put on Through The Wire and she said "Whats that?" :(

I am a massive Lil' Wayne fan, he would be my favourite modern rapper, he has ventured into the singing/autotune area but its not his strength and i think he knows it. I wouldnt expect him to do an album of crap like Kanye.

Your entitled to your opinion, but I disagree it isn't crap. In fact, it is one of the best albums I've ever heard, and I am a big music fan who listens to anything and everything. I love College Dropout, Late Registration and Graduation..but 808's is something fresh in music imo. He doesn't use autotune like Chris Brown or Rihanna etc etc, he said he uses it because he loves what it can do with your voice, and that it is fun to use.

So personally speaking, I think it is one of the best albums I have ever heard, but it is a case of you'll either love it or hate it. Btw, I've seen 10 year old kids listening to Metallica or Eminem..does that mean those artists are rubbish? Most certainly not! As for Lil Wayne..can't stand him. So just goes to show with the likes of Kanye or Lil Wayne, you either love em or hate em!

That's her told. At least you can go home feeling cool.

no it was a talk box, the electro harmonix "golden throat", a talk box is completely different from a vocoder

anyway on topic, the kanye album is cack, one of the worst major releases ive ever heard, how it got those reviews is beyond me, just goes to show how much professional critics really know about anything - as for lil wayne ive never actually heard anything by him, i think his name puts me off or something, am i missing anything?

personnaly, i think u are insane to be a hip hop fan nd not to hav heard lil wayne. at the moment nobody can get the flow or beat like in lil wayne's he has mastered the current hip hop style. and for kanye i like his new album but he done a good job at lil wayne's style but not as good college dropout or late registration

    +1.

I really do think Kanye has brought something really new to the game. I hate this whole purist thing... "I only listen to X/Y/Z because that's real Hip-Hop". I think Hip-Hop has and always will be about breaking down barriers, blending styles and blurring the lines between genres. Think about Run DMC and Aerosmith! That's what Kanye does best. Plus his whole mantra seems to be about the full package, putting 110% into everything he does, be it music, videos, clothing, shows or artwork. I really can't fault most of his work, except Pinocchio Story from 808s. I'd love to hear a studio version of that! :D

I listen to most things with open ears. I quite like some of what Wayne does, but can't quite stomach a full album. Fair ****s to the guy for trying a range of stuff, and doing it in a very wierd way. Takes balls to **** with the formula in mainstream hip hop instead of towing the line like 50 and The Game or most of those awful G Funk Gangsta revivalists.

That said I think Kanyes latest was absolutely horrible. It just got alot of leeway because the critics put him on a pedestal these past few years. If Prince had released the album it would have got 1/5 stars from everywhere... and it'd have decent vocals.

but i dont like the current hiphop style or kanyes new album so perhaps we are just looking for completely different things from our music

A much as I repect Kanye for trying to sing and trying to write songs rather than the usual "sample a classic song and put a new hook on it" approach, i think the results are mediocre at best.

Has anyone heard him do this stuff live? Saw him on Saturday Night Live there before xmas; it was rough i tells ya, rough. Nothing can disguise the fact that he can't sing. Autotune will only fix his pitch, but he lacks the flare/soul/strength/confidence of a talented singer and no technology can emulate that.

Ya he was woeful on SNL, that's why I think the album serves as an interesting side project before he jumps back into his regular stuff because you would not pay for him to "sing" 808s live

LIL wayne in my opinion is wat they call a lazy rapper

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,503 ✭✭✭Makaveli

How so? He releases more material than anyone else right now. Do you mean in terms of work ethic or in terms of the work itself?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 534 ✭✭✭jimmay

I think he means lazy in terms of his delivery...am I wrong? I'd probably agree at times he is mad sloppy on the mike like he just blabs it out but it seems to be workin for him and the public certainly in the US are lovin it so fair play to him. I think alot of it has to do with all the sizzurp he drinks (you always see him with styrofoam cups).
But personally I think he's a mad interesting rapper some of his stuff is class, some is crap. He has so much material like 2 new songs seem to appear every day online, it's hard to keep up with him! Countless remixes, mixtapes and collabos. And apparently now he's doing a rock album! So lazy in terms of work rate I think not! Fair balls to him anyway!

YA!!!!!!!!!! he is lazy in terms of delivery but he dont write his lyrics on a pad he has mastered biggies style of just getting on a mic and just spitting from the heart.

it can be sloppy i guess i mean crank that weezy wee made no sense what so ever but it sounded good ''i like chicken chicken potatoe salad watermelon grape cool aid i be yelling'' like wdf!!!!!!!!!!haha

Still you cant realli knock kanye west i like to see it this way he lost his mum his girlfriend.

He is just experimenting with different methods i guess 808 is the product of it i hope he gets back together soon because him common talib kweli legend etc........ totally i mean without a doubt revive rap as we have it today who the ish is SOULJA BOY!!!!!!!!!!!

Im still true to lilwayne and his work (the rock album ewwwww prom queen is good though:P) and kanye west even though i hate vocoder:mad:!!!!!!!!!!!!

These two could bring rap/hiphop back to life.

ps for those of you wondering what sizzurp is its promethazine (like a cold tonic or medicine) mixed with sprite it doesnt get you high or what ever the rumours have it =] like lil wayne said it it just clean out the bad toxins HAHA

Really loving 808s and Heartbreak; it seems so much more real than anything that was on Graduation. I was slowly losing interest in Kanye with each album but this is f*cking refreshing.
