Catholic Church 'cannot be trusted' with the safety of children

THE CATHOLIC Church “cannot be trusted to consistently put the safety of children above all other considerations”,

A Catholic diocese left vulnerable children at risk of sexual abuse and even had a policy of giving gardai minimal information about a priest suspected of abuse, a damning report has found.

The report, by a Catholic Church watchdog, slated childcare protection practices in the Diocese of Cloyne, warning that they "alarmingly" failed vulnerable youngsters and left them at risk.

The shocking National Board for Safeguarding Children NBSC report ordered into two separate complaints of clerical child sex abuse in the Diocese of Cloyne found that child protection policies were inadequate, overly focussed on the needs of the accused cleric and inappropriately delayed.

How much money was spent on this report? A cursory glance at any newspaper in Ireland over the past 15 years probably would have told you that.

Oh yes, if your kids ever get molested I'm sure you'll remember all the nice things the offender did before judging.

It amazes me that nobody ever talks about the influence of the Churches ridiculous celibacy law on all of this.

It is not natural for any human being to spend his whole life not having sex and never having a loving relationship. If your repress this desire it will simply come out in other ways. This is why there are so many peadophiles in the priesthood.

A natural human desire gets twisted into an unnatural one if you repress it, human psychology, lesson 1.

And amazingly, all because the Medieval Catholic Empire didnt want to have to divide up it's land among the offspring of priests - thus made up some guff about celibacy being God's will.

You know up until your post, nobody had said that everything the priests did was wrong. The story just says that they can't be trusted entirely, which they can't. Being overly defensive about it just invites ridicule.

    Words

Ah well, if they really had a problem with it they'd join another religion. :pac:

Though would imagine that a lot of priests who are paedophiles were so before ever joining the priesthood. In earlier times there were other motives to joining the priesthood other than to spread God's word. D:

Besides, how would we be able to fight off demons without the help of priests who sacrifice their lives to try and stop the demon. Sure the demon usually gets them but it's severly weakened by GOD POWAH.

Of course they can't be trusted entirely but this story is nothing new really, the terrible and brutal past of the church can't be ignored. I thought wrongly it seems and i apologise that this would be another story where a lot of people would latch onto how terrible priests/nuns ect are/were. I wasn't trying to be overly defensive about it but to be fair the vast majority of stories regarding the Church are negative, ignoring the lot of good they have done ie education, aid. BTW i'm agnostic and in my mid 20s and don't have have an close affiliation with the church or anything, I just think people are ott in their views of the church.

Slightly off topic but still relevant (I think), a lot of folk have negative about the church of Rome if only because they still put their priests first, thinking they are above the law of country and constitution!
The same pope that currently sits preaching down to some, constructed an edict that was released to his underlings which stated that sex crimes were to be reported to the church authorities, not to the legal authorities.
It stated that priests were not under pressure to report such thing they find out about, to the law but were to keep it 'in house'.

This 'request' has yet still to be revoked.

Clergy sexual abuse issues were/are handled by the "Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith" - not the Gardi, etc.
Personally, I find this alone disgusting. The veil of in-house secrecy continues!

    See section 20/21 here: http://www.votf.org/vineyard/Oct5_2006/bbc.html

    Quote from section 22:
There is also an over-riding omission in both the 1962 document and its descendant, the 2001 declaration. Both documents concentrate on prosecuting the alleged offenders and protecting the institutional church from the fallout of public knowledge of the crimes.

Aye, concentrate in 'treating' the offenders 'in-house'. Telling very little to the public and authorities as possible.

More VERY interesting reading here: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/1530296/Protest-at-BBC-%27attack%27-on-Pope.html

    Dear Gawd, it never ends...

    Todays paper:
BISHOP OF CLOYNE John Magee was coming under strong pressure to resign last night as a damning Church report revealed he and his diocese had put children at risk by delaying in reporting clerical sex abuse to gardaí...
    Source: http://www.examiner.ie/irishexaminer/pages/story.aspx-qqqg=ireland-qqqm=ireland-qqqa=ireland-qqqid=80518-qqqx=1.asp

My point is, will they ever kop themselves on!

The catholic church has zero moral authority in this country anymore because of the behaviour of it's representatives. The fact that this cover-up is still continuing and people are still protecting paedophiles means that catholicism is dying.

Yes but the church, as a whole, protected those who were abusing children and still are.

But it was the majority that remained silent that are equally guilty. The molesters are criminals and should be treated as such within the law, simple as that. I doubt if that will ever happen though as the link between the government (fianna fail) and the catholic church is as strong as ever.

The same church that has been habitualy protecting offenders, and knowingly moving repeat offenders to new parishes.

This attitude is dreadful, "they are not all like that", so ... lets just forget about it...

If you respect what the church "should" stand for, then you should be more keen to see this kind of behaviour removed, and offenders handed over to the police immediately. Delaying tacticts, and "sweeping under the carpet" stuff, makes people accessories to crimes in my book

Or those who were already attracted to children joined the priesthood because of all the contact they'd have with children.

    Michael Jackson?

seriously though, no not really. when you see the amount of kids abused by their own parents, there's really not anybody left who can be totally trusted with the safety of kids.

if the church wants to come out of this whole thing then they need to name and shame every single priest on their books with a history of this and let the law sort them out.

or rampaging mobs of angry parents, either way it'll get sorted.

i havnt been to mass or inside a church for anything other than a funeral in at least 5 years.

however people do actually believe that stuff so they shouldnt be expected to not worship just because of a few priests........the priests should be expected to .......well... not be paedophiles.

Someone texted in to newstalk the other day about this story saying "god bless our pope and god forgive those who want to drag up the past"

Yes in this case its the people who want to drag up the past who need to be forgiven. I wonder did he mean the ones who preach from a 2000 year old book?

A 2000 year old book that exposes the corruption and hypocracy of the Roman Catholic Church that it is supposed to be preaching out of.

And to think, insane parents actually put their kids into the hands of these pedophiles! The priesthood is saturated with sins. Catholicism is a prisonhouse of religion. I just don't understand how any parent who loves their child, could place their child into the hands of a pervert organization that PROHIBITS their priests from having any type of sex whatsoever.

Something is very wrong with this The Bible teaches that Old Testament priests were REQUIRED to be married. We are warned in 1st Timothy 4:1-3 about FALSE PROPHETS would come to us, FORBIDDING marriage. Timothy 4:1-3 is condemning the Catholic Church!

So why do Catholics continue to send their children to such a Godless organization? It's because people today reject the Bible, and follow the traditions of sinful men in the Vatican instead.

1st Timothy 4:1 to 3 is irrefutable PROOF of this fact.

    Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;

    Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.
    1st Timothy 4v1to2.

The Vatican forbids marriage for its priests, thus turning them into demented pedophiles. You Catholic parents are placing your children into the hands of demented and unholy minded men, with no other way to fulfill their sexual lusts except on your children!

That's insane! Argue as you may, there are no less than 10,667 victims of Catholic priest molestations who would agree with this.

BEWARE OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH! Your children are in grave danger!!!

I don't agree entirely with Timothy, the Bible has been manipulated by various Popes, and some gospels have been lost, maybe deliberately. Who can say that we have the right to kill animals, or that God wants us to do so.
