    Great deal.

Just be aware the stick has U3, which some people find annoying. Auto-boot etc.

To convert it back to a 'normal' USB stick, Sandisk provide an uninstaller. That uninstaller itself has some very very odd habits, last time I used it Kaspersky gave me a warning, it also sends data out through an active internet connection, very strange, considering the role of the utility.

Sorry OP, I just felt it was necessary to throw out a caution.

thanks amalgam, interesting to know. i already have a 2gig u3 cruzer and that auto boot thing IS annoying. especially back in college when only one extra hotswap drive was allowed on the pcs. so every time all you got was the read only usc/cdd crap

U3 is a hardware modification, typically a USB thumb drive with U3 has an extra chip on the board. The ability to boot Linux, Acronis recovery software, Ghost etc with U3 active isn't possible, same for access in your case, at College etc.

Once the stick has been converted back to normal, it can be booted normally etc, with whatever you want, Linux, recovery software..

People have tampered with U3 tech to allow it to boot any .iso image, including installing XP onto the Asus Eee 'netbooks'. U3 has also been modified to deliver and install a malicious payload onto PC's that have been locked down, as it has some very odd behaviour, your typical Admin wouldn't be a fan of it, at a guess..

His feedback seems ok but no idea if it will be any good till I get it. I'm not that worried about the speed of it as long as it's 16gb and it works. I'll update the thread when I get it and let you know what its like.

that's not a sandisk cruzer though, there's a big difference, both on the outside and the inside. not all usb sticks are made equal. :)

just bought one there too. unfortunately too late for the deal but 22 euro is still a good deal for a 16gb sandisk cruzer

As said, not all usb sticks are equal. And i'd be wary of cheap ebay high capacity sticks, often when you plug them in, although they will register as being 16Gb when you click on properties, however they are often lower capacity and are hacked to appear larger than they are. You'll only know when you try and put 16Gb of data onto it, and get an error after the real amount of the drive has been filled.

While you may not care about getting a particularly fast model you will care if it's a painfully slow model which a lot of the cheapo ebay models I've seen are like. If it's as slow as some of the models I've seen then the 16GBs is useless as you won't have the patience to use half of it.

Also there are the pitfalls like alan explains above.

Yep I know what your talking about and the 'real' size and speed will be what I'll check when I get it. Usb drives are what I use to transfer data around, not to store important data so generic is what does me day to day. Speed isn't a major issue to me either. Certainly if you want both the speed and reliability I'd spend more on a brand name that's guaranteed. The rule of thumb that you get what you pay for is so often true.

Get all of your points though and should have said this in my original post.
