Was in denmark a few weeks ago.

We pay high taxes, so do they.

They have an immaculate road system, ah... so do we?

They have an actual military. An actual airforce.
We have a well trained mini army. To call the air corp anything is a joke.
For example, we have a population of 5,000,000 or so. They do to, as far as aircraft go we have a few jet trainers. They have them and 60 F-16's.

Just makes me wonder where all tax money goes to. Swallowed up by roads? I've seen our roads, and ive heard danes complaining that the government should stop building highways because theres too many.

They have 100m/bit broadband countrywide. We have it in the cities at minimal bandwidth, lucky if you can find it in the country.

    Rant over.

No they don't. The average advertised speed in Denmark is here:
    http://www.websiteoptimization.com/bw/0711/

It's from Oct 07, and predated the cable and DSL improvements in Ireland (20 Mbit, and 24Mbit respectively).

However, you did probably listen to a lot of Danish people, who are likley to have exaggerated their countries current status considerably.

Firstly, Denmark is a country that has been wealthy for a considerable time. Irealnd has only been "wealthy" very lately.

Secondly, they don't all piss their money away on three or four bed semis in the arsehole of nowhere and are happy to live in apartments close to the city centre and therefore excellent public transport is viable due to higher population densities. By not blowing their money on gaffs in the sticks with gardens they can spend their hard earned cash on what they see as more important things.

Thirdly, like the rest of Scandinavia, they don't tolerate corrupt/parochial politicans. Recently a Swedish minister resigned for forgetting to pay her tv licence. Can you imagine that here?

Fourthly, their taxes are actually higher than here.

So do you want to pay higher taxes? Do you wanna get rid of corrupt/parochial politicans? Live in an apartment?

Of course if you think Denmark and their system is superior to here, you can always move there and try and get a job.

    Good luck. :)

We don't know what to do with money. We tend to... piss it away.

Suburban trains in the Copenhagen area stop at around 01:30 I think it is and start again at about 05:00.

And yes, it does actually be on time. The moaning from the locals if a train is two minutes late is unreal. As another tourist once said to me over there, they only have to deal with " the rich man's problem".

    Århus is a great spot.

Price of a pint can be steep over there, but I find there's more of a fluctuation in it from place to place. No racket like the LVA and its buddies over there.

    high income != wealth

Ireland had high tax revenue for a few years. An incompetent government pissed it away... We've never been a 'wealthy' country, we had a high GNP for a decade or so.

Not the same thing at all.

Yey, yet there was no appetite for higher taxes like Denmark.

The Govt. gave tax decreases to everybody and most decided to piss it away.

I've yet to see an example of a low tax, high quality public services country in Europe, but hey, we fell for it!

Seems you have to have high taxes to have good roads, good health systems etc.

Who'd have thought that? A novel idea I know!

Mad Men's Don Draper : What you call love was invented by guys like me, to sell nylons.

Of course being the 'tolerant' SF supporter you are that would make sense. Have you ever been to Denmark or are you operating from the same uneducated mentality that is apparent in your other post?

    Just to remind you...

Care you explain this apparent contradiction in your logic?
