In Store discounts

    Hi All,

I was asking myself this question today as I navigated my way around Dublin's second Zoo, Blanchardstown Shopping Centre.

"Do I prefer to see the discount on the price tag or when its done at the till?"

    Picture the scene:

You're standing outside a clothes shop and plastered on the window display is "20% off everything" and words to that effect.

On entering the shop the clothes have two types of labels. My question is which label do you prefer?

    Label 1:

It's a jacket, and over the hanger is a lable that says
"Was 149 euro Now 119 Euro"

    Or

    Label 2:

    Same type label but with

    "20% discount applied at till
    jacket 149 euro"
    discount2.JPG

You see when I look at label 1 I immediately look at the cheaper price and see they have knocked some money off. But it was the first price I noticed, then the 149. So in my head I am thinking, "is the discount applied? Will I get more off?"

Anyway, I left thinking about what I would have prefered to see, and I came to the conclusion that seeing something along the lines of label 2 would have made me more inclined to feel I was getting a better bargain.

As a marketing tool, which do you prefer? What do you see having better results?

    Looking forward to your replies.

*Yeah I know the graphics are lame*

For me, Option 1. It is very clear, what the saving is and more importantly what the sales price is. Also no need to verify cashier has applied discount.

Displaying a lower price might also have more (sub-conscious) appeal to a wider group.

You will find that a certain portion of the population will not immediately comprehend the % discount and therefore move on without getting your message.

    So option 1.

Option 1 - I dont want to have to work out percentages. I dont care about percentages! - iif it was 50 and now its 20 quid, I just want to know that!
Be clear and keep it simple
    GOOD LUCK
