Tipp have finnaly got rid of the county champions choosing the captain so only kerry and kilkenny left.

Most would agree a good thing i assume?

I agree with that. There are many good captaincy candidates who never get near a senior county final.

I've always hated that tradition and I'm incredibly glad that Dublin don't apply it - sometimes you can get the right captain (eg Moynihan captaining Kerry) but it just increases the chances that you won't... plus it can cause unnecssary friction.

funny how the 2 most successful teams have it though ;)

its not only those 2 though im sure, alot of countires still do it.most in fact, though some are unofficial.

the country champiohship system in kerry is crazy complicated and im not going to go into it. kerry aint done too bad as regards captain, yes there has been one or 2 mishaps like eoin brosnan, but having gooch as captain 2 years ago was great as he was and still is, a massive leader on the team. declan sullivan too. most of the leading kerry players (darragh, thomas, the Pony, the gooch, declan s) have all got their chance and theres very few players who have been good candidates and not got their chance. in fact, i struggle to think of actual players that you could say, its a pity he was never captain.

i woulldnt change it, as tradition dies hard in Kerry.

I bet though, in the future, that if a player from the county champions is maintaining his place on the team and is playing well, he will get preference for the captaincy out of respect to tradition. It just takes away the fact that IT HAS TO be a player from the county champions that captains the Tipperary team.

I still can't agree with the system though because it rotates the captaincy around needlessly - why not just be able to choose, say, Moynihan and stick with him for 4 or 5 years regardless of how well Glenflesk/East Kerry do?

Going off topic a bit here, but I don't understand how the regional system works in Kerry. Does the likes of Moynihan compete in the county championship on two separate teams if he represents both Glenflesk and East Kerry?

A captaincy is mainly a ceremonial position anyway, on the field the captain is just like any player. They just get all the glory when they win :D

That said though, I wish the Waterford CB would bring in the rule for 2009 only, just so Mullane would FINALLY get the job!

AFAIK, Glenflesk are an Intermediate team this year. East Kerry would be made up of the best players from Junior & Intermediate clubs in that division of Kerry and play in the Senior Championship. Therefore, he can play in both Intermediate Championship & Senior Championship with 2 different teams.

If Glenflesk were a Senior club this year, none of their players could play with East Kerry.

Same arrangements in Cork, but both Colleges (UCC & CIT) have first call on any Junior or Intermediate players that are enrolled, i.e., if chosen to play with the respective college, then they cannot play with their divisional team.

In 1997, a number of hurlers from Cloyne (including Diarmaid O' Sullivan & Donal Og Cusack) won the Cork County Intermediate Championship with Cloyne and won the Cork County Senior Championship with Imokilly (the East Cork Divisional side). Then, in 1998, Cloyne were a Senior Club so those players played with Cloyne in the Cork County Senior Championship and were, ironically, drawn against Imokilly (Imokilly won and went on to retain the Senior Championship).

When limerick got to the All Ireland 2 years ago the Captain of the panel James O'Brien wasn't even playing so the vice captain Damien reale took up the role.

Shows how stupid the rule is.

"Redser" was captain of tipp one year aswell and he only came on as a sub usually if my memory serves me correct:confused:

Yeah, similar thing happened to us in 2006. Flynners was captain for us, but he didn't make the starting 15 against Cork in the All-Ireland semi, so the captaincy went to Shane O'Sullivan, who was only starting his 3rd ever Championship game. I think it was that scenario that caused our CC to scrap the rule for 07 onwards.

I still don't understand the Kerry system in so far as I thought that it was all the club teams played a certain championship moving forward onto Munster. Then they all kind of combined to play a Mid Kerry vs East Kerry vs West Kerry vs North Kerry vs South Kerry, kind of job. I was nearly sure a couple of the fella's on the Kerins O'Rahillys team went back and played in that system thing.

Galway used to have this rule in football but I think they've done away with it. It was a really stupid idea. A few years ago Corofin won the county title and nominated Kieran Comer to be captain. Turned out Comer didn't make the starting 15 which meant the captain of the county team was only a sub. Daft.

I agree with others. The decision on a county team captain should not be determined by who the county champions are.
