On right now on Sky one.

Any opinions lads? Military awards sponsered by the Sun newspaper.... Not too sure about it here.

BUT......... I am a civvie, maybe some of our uniformed contributors have a differing opinion?

I caught the start of this. They gave an award to a soldier who was classed as the most wounded soldier ever to rehabilitate.

The poor bloke can't even speak without one of those text machines.

They did a little "Theres 2 people who can't be here tonight to wish you well....but we have them live on video" piece and I was shocked

I thought it was going to be his mates in Afghanistan or wherever, it was David and Victoria Beckham!? If I went through what that bloke had gone through the last 2 fvcktards I'd want to see is Posh and Becks giving me a pat on the back.

I missed it. By the sounds of it though I haven't missed much David Beckham and his stick insect telling some wounded soldier that he did a good job... What a load of crap.

I personally don't agree with the idea of glamorising the military in that fashion. Soldiers already get awards for going beyond the call of duty. Victoria's Cross, Medal of Honour and The DSM in The Irish Defence Forces. The last thing that the military world needs in my opinion is a group of journalists handing out prizes to soldiers.

Maybe I have the entire premise for the show wrong because I missed it and I am open to correction but from my past experience anything to do with the sun is a load of tripe and should be avoided at the best of times.

While I agree soldiers should be honoured by the public for extraordinary acts, I feel this is definitely the wrong way to go about it.

It was highly exclusionary, where they had nominees who were highly wounded and were just not good enough for the award.

I was also a bit put off about 2 para being given the special recognition award, while I know they have spent alot of time in A'stan, and have sustained heavy Casualties, Prince Charles is there CIC, so it just seems a bit suspect to me!!!

I think the words "Sky" and "Sun Newspaper" say it all!!

The gratitude of the British people would be better shown by giving these guys the support (financial and other) they need to get their lives back together but currently aren't getting

I thought it was nice to see them get some public recognition!

theese brave men deserve to be supported by other means imop,
they need to be paid more, and given the benifits they deserve

shocks me when i hear that they dont get given the help they need, when they are knowingly risking thier lives

I know its a little old but found this article
    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1024349/British-soldiers-paid-Quite-right--jobs-dangerous-says-traffic-warden.html

how does this compare to what are lads get paid
an extra 3,500 for going on a tour is shocking

Mixed bag of reactions as well over on arrse, rangeing from "I thought it was good to see our squaddies get some recognition" to "WTF!! that bollix:mad:"

Pretty much the same here really, its nice to see that we all noticed it though. Seems the general concensus is that Sky and the Sun made a tits of it, Beckham and Boring couldn't even be bothered to attend....what was the point of that?

Well my humble opinion on the matter is to put it bluntly it was a crock of bolix.Granted, soldiers(note i did not specify british soldiers) should have their contributions to society recognised but an awards cermony hosted by the "sun" and "sky" just gives the whole thing a tacky and cheap air and ultimately reflects badly on the soldiers.A formal ceremony hosted by someone respectable(the state or some organisation) would have been acceptable and would have done the army great justice, not that glamourised piece of crap hosted by tabloid tv and newspapers.A sombre and formal cermony is whhat is need, afterall this is the armed forces not the oscars.

Yes, the monotonous drone gave a speech and it was fierce long winded, then he presented 2 "special recognition" awards. One to the mother of a fallen soldier who has raised a good bit for Charity, and one to the 2nd Batt The Parachute Regiment, Who just happen to be the Regiment that he is Colonel in Chief of. Coinkeydink I don't think.

Although I didn't see the programme, these types of awards are a bad idea in my opinion.

A few years back we'd a 'good conduction medal', but the thing was that a lot of good people were passed over for it in favour of lads who never done anything more than sit behind an orderly room desk for their careers. Other's got it because they were in favour with senior officers etc.

So while on the surface these can's look nice to civilian, behind it all they can be very hurtful to the guys left behind.

It's all about who you know Mairt, when it comes to anything whether it's a Conduct Medal or a driving course. You're in long enough to know that by now. :P

It's been said already but how can you have an awards show for Service Personnel that's in the same tone as something like the TV Quick awards?
What's next? Heat magazine's best beret?
Saw about 5 mins of it, 'most outstanding Sailor or Marine'??? Went to a Matelot??!!:eek:
