I am considering getting a 70-300mm lens when I get my D90 as well as the 18-105mm. Are genuine nikon lenses better than sigma or tamron or are they all pretty much the same?

    Sigma : Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 APO Macro Super DG Lens - £150
    Nikon : Nikon 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 G AF-S VR IF-ED Lens - £300

Or would I be better getting something with much lower aperature e.g. f2.8 for £400+

Depends on what your shooting... Will you be shooting wildlife, birds, landscapes or low light photograpy ie sports under floodlights??

Quilmore is right, the 70-300mm VR lens from Nikon is great. I sold one and ended up buying another one to use when i got the D700,it's great value, sharp, VR works great and it's a lot lighter than the 70-200mm f2.8 too.

A lens with Image Stabilizer would be a good buy.
If you can afford a f/4 or f/2.8 then go for them as you are more than likely to get much better image quality and better for sports or fast movement.

    no F/4 on nikons... :(
mind you, the F/2.8 with VR weights about 3+ times what the 70-300 VR does...
