First Beer...

Right - brothers I need opinions.

My brother is turning the ripe oul age of 18 on Monday and wants to try beer.
I am wondering what should we get him for his first?

The only tastes of alcohol I believe he's had is Rose wine with 7up (I know!! but that's what my parents let him have)

his first taste of the wet stuff will turn his taste buds no doubt, he just needs to have a second of whatever it is and get used to it... i recommend heineken or carlsberg though.

A couple of cans of Dutch Gold, it will kill his taste buds and everything else will taste nice afterwards

Plus it will prepare him for drinking cheap stuff as a student

If he's gonna be sampling the sweet nectar he may as well have the most choice going.

It is a difficult issue. Do you expose him first to the pure p!ss that is dutch, so everything from there on in is amazing. Or do you go down the route of hitting him with the good stuff e.g paulaner, erdinger etc.

Best bet, head to a nice bar, and ask the barman what he would recommend for the young man or let him chose himself, at his own peril of course

How about something like Nastro Azzuro? Relatively light and easy to drink, but with a decent flavour so you know you're not drinking total crap? It's available in most supermakets and offies.



If he's looking for something a little sweeter, maybe Anchor Steam beeer, which is almost a cross between a lager and an ale. Molloys stock it, and probably some other places too.

Thanks for advice -- Dutch Gold I would not let him near.
I always thought Budweiser & Heinekin were kinda gack (but then I don't like beer - which is why you were shocked will lol)

He lives in the World of Warcraft hence lack of eh... socialising! lol. But he's requested beer for his birthday.

OT I would suggest a good pint of uncle Arthurs (some wimmins put blackcurrent in it when they try it first, just sayin is all;)) Failing that I would suggest Hino or Carlsberg, both easy to drink and can be (I apologise brothers but the lads never had a beer before)..............shandied! TBH I think it's more about having a good experience in good company, so as long as you are with him, I am sure he will have fun!

Edit: Don't the Porter House let you taste samples before you buy? Might be worth a look!

All I am doing is attempting to guide the young man towards some decent beer so that he doesn't err and fall into the clutches of a certain unnamed American fizzy water or its ilk. That said, the first beer I ever drank was Harp, and despite it being Harp I took to the taste of beer like a duck to water.

Very much an acquired taste, took me a little while before I could tolerate it, which was the only reason why I didn't suggest it. Murphys is sweeter than Guinness and probably an easier introduction to stout. It is from Cork though, which rules it out.

I wonder, do you need to drink the terrible p1ss like bud first to appreciate the good beers out there, or can you just go straight for the good stuff? My first was carlsberg and it was gak. I was so glad when someone told me I wasn't supposed to like it to begin with.

I recommend you start the young brother off on something like Zaff suggested, nothing too hoppy tasting, that could put him off the stuff for a while. he's not going to be used to the "beer" taste, and it is an acquired taste after all, and hops are what give beer that taste after all.

Guinness isn't a beer as such, it's a meal! lol Far too heavy to start with
But I'll try one of those Sierra Nevada /Nastro / Carlsburg (I can't stand the smell of heiniken or bud) He'll be drinking in the house, I doubt he'd be into going to a pub just yet. Just so we can have something for him to try

They had a Boston beer on when I went to the Bull, I'm pretty sue it was an IPA. it was bloody gorgeous. :cool:

Not tenants that's for sure. That's what my first beer was and it was awful. Miller would be pretty easy to drink no matter what you like so it might be a good one to start with and let him experiment with other beers until he finds one he likes.

It might be worth pointing out a few things to him though, such as Budweiser is for people with no willy.:D

you could try him and something like Leffe or Paulaner which are generally a lot easier to come by these days.

That or if he wants a beer with stabilisers he could try a corona or cold oz beer, as they don't really have that much of a taste

Something 'easy' drinking.

Whatever you do, DO NOT give the young man mass produced American carbonated water(with a few added hops). It will just ruin the experience for him, and it is his first time.

This can be tricky. By the time I was bought my first beer by a family member, I had been drinking cider for about a year and a half (I don't know how) but couldn't have them all knowing that, so had to decide on a beer the spot. I went with Heineken and it wasn't the worst decision I've ever made.

Your best bet is to get him something easy to drink and commonly available. The easy to drink bit is obvious. But I feel it's just as important for it to be commonly available so that he feels comfortable the first time he goes to order beer for himself in a pub. My recommendation would be Miller, Carlsberg or Heineken, in that order. All will go down easy.

The only other thing I'll say is bring the lad to a pub, no matter what he says. I'd have rathered my first alcohol to be a nice pint in a nice pub with my brother (or sister in your case) but, alas, I ensured that was not the case with my teenaged drinking...

Well, thought I'd report back, Dad bought a can of the following
Heineken
Budweiser
Bulmers
Guinness (yes a can)

After some wine on Christmas Day he decided to try the Bulmers... and really liked it lol..
we'll see if he tries any of the others over the next few days.

I hated beer even at 18 if I remember right, can't get enough of the stuff now haha.

It goes for most people I know, Vodka -> Alcopops -> Bulmers -> Beer.

Then people venture off into Guinness or other "wordly" beers.

i started on the black stuff at 15/16. I saw other people drinking it, and hadnt a clue what to order for a pint, so i kinda just blurted out guinness.

You think thats bad? I'm 27 and made it one of my new years resolutions to get started on the demon drink to see what/if i'm missing out:) Have info telling me American beers are pure piss, stick to european stuff...KaG told me at a beers he holds Erdinger in high regard, and some others in college go for Carlsberg...anyhow i'll get back to you all on how it goes:P

As a young kinder of 18 years und 1 day, I have tried many beers. Erdinger and the old Vitamin H are of top distinction while Arthur just doesn't cut the mustard for me now. Cider is muck.

My mates are all disgustingly into Budweiser. They think it tastes of rice? WTF? I just tell 'em it's piss.

Vodka is kept for the wimmenz.

While if the shots are out, it's jagerbombers all the way!

I know brother. But i have not tasted such Camra approved cider. My trip to Cornwall is penciled in for July 2013.;)
