My hair varies from gingery brown to the more typical orange ginger, and my beard is proper ginge. Except for my 'tache which is quite dark, when it's short it actually looks black! Looks ridiculous when I'm growing out a beard

Same here.. except the ginger is only in the lower half of my beard really... its like a rainbow, my hair is brown, i have black sideburns/mustache , and a ginger beard! Ridiculous!!

    Is there any serious explanation??
except for the "blame it on being irish" thing

ginger beards are cute, i am gay but im not a stereotype, most people cant even guess till i tell them And i know alot of girls that agree with me that ginger beards/ gingers in general are cute. :-)

Also i get tints of ginger on my sideburns dark brown chin, light above lip, and light brown under jaw.

I've got the red hair + beard. Always found it odd when you'd see fellas with jet black hair and red beards. I don't usually leave it too long though as I feel like I belong in a Mel Gibson film:)

Well I have ginger hair and facial hair, etc. Although I dye my hair and shave so no probs there. ;) Actually it occurs quite commonly in Ireland and Scotland due to the fact that many of us are of Scandinavian Viking decent you know due to the invasions and setters. To understand why it occurs, you must understand the mechanics of hair colour. The clairol web site actually has a nice description of what your hair color is composed of:
Your natural haircolour is determined by three factors:

    * The type of natural colour pigment melanin present in your hair's cortex. There are only two types of pigment:
    o Eumelanin (black pigment)
    o Phenomelanin (red/yellow pigment)
    * How many melanin granules exist
    * Whether those granules are close together or far apart

Here is how these elements determine your natural haircolour:

    * Black hair contains densely packed melanin granules full of eumelanin.
    * Brown hair has a loose pattern of eumelanin-filled granules or granules blended with eumelanin and phenomelanin, depending upon its cool or warm tones and its darkness or lightness.
    * Blonde hair contains few granules with minimal bits of eumelanin. In fact, the eumelanin is so sparse that the color of blonde hair is the colour of the hair fibre itself.
    * Red hair has loosely packed granules containing phenomelanin.
So it seems that for facial hair on some people, what can happen is that it receives less eumelanin that on the head and thus results is a more coppery tone. Also many of us carry a recessive gene for red hair without necessarily having red hair. Thank the Vikings ;) By the way, scientific studies have actually suggested that the Celts were actually a rather dark race with sallow skin and dark hair whereas the Vikings had the fair or red hair and paler skin. Also, apparently early humans had mainly red and other more dense colours like brown and black developed due to certain factors. I'm a science nerd! lol ;)
