Anyone rented in south of France before?

Hi I have a quick and relatively straight forward question, any feed back much appreciated.
The folks are renting a house in South of France for next June for 2 weeks. The people have asked for FULL payment 6 weeks in advance... I've never rented there before but have in Italy when we just handed over a deposit in advance. While I totally understand their concern about cancellation and all the rest, the cost for the 2 weeks in advance is quite substantial and was eventually going to be shared amongst a group of friends and family, they are going to send it on if necessary but I'm a tad worried about my folks getting ripped off/wool pulled over their eyes!
    Is this normal?

I've only rented once (between Toulouse and Carcassonne) but yes, we had to pay in full in advance too. We were renting direct from the owner.

Father in law rents out in advance and seeks payment in full prior to arrival. It seems to be the way it's done down there.
