Boyfriend wants to take me ice skating. I'm apprehensive as i'm quite overweight & think it would work as a huge [pardon the pun] disadvantage for someone who can't even walk on frost for fear of falling! I want to go but weighing 14stone on those thin blades is off putting!! :(

You have nothing to worry about. I'm around the same weight and went last night, no problem. I was much better than most of the skinnymalinks flailing around the place! I understand your fears as I have felt them in the past when I was uncomfortable with myself but honestly in this case they are unfounded. You will be fine, and if you find it tough it will have nothing to do with your weight. :)

I wouldn't worry about it too much, I would consider myself as being overweight and went ice skating for the first time a few weeks back, it took a while but I eventually did a lap on my own (after 20 min)

I have been both skinny & fat and Iceskating for me is lethal either way..
I'm terrified, stiff as a board & glued to the spot no matter what I weigh..

If you're nervous treading frost, as I am, Ice skating will be horrendous for you... It's the fear of falling, not skating

It has nothin to do with your weight I think...

But if you're brave enough, go for it..otherwise maybe try bowling ;)

Haha great that's fine so :) I'll give it a shot. I suppose I don't mind falling, and I don't mind making an ass out of myself. But I would hate to think that it's because of my weight & I would be mortified if I broke a skate or something! [Needless to say am quite clueless about it all but thanks for the replies! :) Had to laugh at the skinnymalinks!!! ]

    Aw jesus :P

    You're stabler on your feet!

You've got to enjoy life - not tell yourself "I'll dye my hair a hot colour when I'm skinny" "I'll go on holiday when I'm skinny" "I'll dance without a care in the world when I'm skinny"

Just do it. Make yourself happy. The easiest way to look great and lose weight (if you want to) is to have a good time despite whatever weight you are not feel like everything rests on it.

    Hi,

I think you should stop worrying and go for it, you have nothing to worry about. Its a common misconception that the blades are real thin, there not! I know its hard but you should try not to let your insecurities get in the way of your happyness. Youve got a fellah who obviously loves you and wants you to have a good time, he'll look after ye!!!

    Bye!:D

    Hiya OP,

Just reassuring you it's not your weight, i'm fair bit heavier than you and it def won't affect your skating. if you're nevous about it, stick to the railings. Also, watch all the other people falling over, once you realise everyone is (except the guy speeding around doing laps, there's always one ) then hopefully you'll feel more comfortable

go for it and enjoy it. I honestly think weight does not have as big an impact on balance as you think it does - some people have balance and some don't. Im skinny but always fall over on ice skates! But even when I fall its still good fun

hope you have a great time

I wouldn't be worried about the weight to be honest! I know some people who play ice hockey are tipping 16stone!

Ice skating is more about balance a few tips for you

Make sure you tighten the boot as hard as you can and all the way to the top!

When Skating bend your knees and lean slightly forward (Never lean back)

Don't try and walk on the ice!

    Wear gloves!

When you fall make a fist!

You have nothing at all to worry about, I was very overweight the first time I went Ice Skating and I took to it without any problems, you'll really enjoy it, and don't be embarrassed if you fall over, the skinniest of people do that too!!!

Ice-Skating is fun. Just view it as that, no one there will be worried about your weight, if you fall, people will giggle, if someone else falls, you will giggle, it's all about fun!!!

I went in a santa suit last week, fell twice and got some great laughs, but I still had fun, noone will care what you look like so don't worry about it.

Just enjoy yourself!!!! And Bring an extra pair of socks, I learned that the hard way!!!!

I used to play ice hockey at an internation level. Trust me when i say 14 stone isnt heavy for ice skates.

I played against a Luxembourgian player who was 6 foot 8 (stats) and he was close to 19 stone. Skates are made to take heavy thumps, sure in fugure skating they do spins jumps etc.

Each blade is rivetted in about 16 different places. and the steel that the blade is made from is about |---| wide. Blades arent shaped like a V, they are shaped like |_|.

Dont worry about making a tit of yourself, everyone does when they go skating, its part of it. You more than likely will fall, but there are barriers that you can hold on to.

Its just a bit of fun - relax and enjoy it

Im 16 stone and I was a speedskater, and trust me, my skates are thinner than anything they will give you. Its all in your mind, go out there and have fun, falling is part of it, just laugh it off, there will be far worse off than you there :)
