The elusive liquid line.....

I'm a HUGE fan of eyeliner; I think it's about the sexiest thing a gal can possibly wear, lingerie and stilettos included!

I love the whole cat's eye, flicks, heavily lined eyelid variations that are to be seen all over the place in recent times. However, I can't for the life of me do it myself. I end up with a gappy, uneven line halfway up my eyelid or something :p So I've figured out that kohl pencils aren't for this job. I have gel eyeliners etc. but I can't seem to work them in this way either. So I'm thinking the best things for this are the almost marker-like liners? With a good applicator?

    Any tips or recommendations appreciated.

I have the easiest time with gel eyeliner. (By that I mean easier than other kinds, not that it's really sooper easy for me cause I'm a legend or something lolz.) What kind of brush are you using? I love the Benefit Get Bent brush, but there are all different kinds of brushes that do the job, maybe you just need to keep experimenting with different ones? I found that a cat-eye is easier if you follow the angle of your bottom eyelid up; this helps to make both sides even. Other than that, all I can say is practice, practice, practice, and maybe read lots of makeup blogs for tips. Let me know if you need any recommendations for blogs!

PillyPen, I wouldn't mind recommentdations for blogs, please!

Hmmm, I still to this day can't be dealing with liquid/gel liners. I just can't seem to make them look right :(

I wouldn't recommmend the marker type one though, it has always left me looking like someone hit me :( It's very hard to get a precise line, in my experience!

I like things you can use brushes with, as I feel I have more control, and I have to agree with PillyPen's suggestion of Benefits Get Bent brush! It really does work! :D

Ok, I have about 10 I read every day through RSS, I'm a weeee bit obsessed.

If you have a livejournal account then the best one (imo) is mac_cosmetics. You can access it without an lj account, but you can ask lots of questions if you have one.

    http://community.livejournal.com/mac_cosmetics

It's awesome for learning tips and new techniques and such. Some of those bitches really know what they're doing. It's also really good for buying cheap MAC stuff. Most of the sellers are legit.

These ones test out tons of products and have some tutorials:
    http://www.musingsofamuse.com/
    http://nessasarymakeup.blogspot.com/
    http://www.makeupandbeautyblog.com/

    This one's UK-based:
    http://lollipop26writes.blogspot.com/

This one doesn't post much and doesn't do tutorials or swatches, but I think her skills are incredible.
    http://padmitasmakeup.blogspot.com/

Then there are a bunch of people on YouTube who are just fabulous:
enkoremakeup (my favorite because he talks about basic things and is sooooo cute!!), nireyna, pursebuzz, sarahvictor, xsparkage, panacea81, aaaaaand askmemakeup. HTH! :)

Try this link here. Between Temptalia and Specktra.net you should find some awesome tutorials. Also, youtube will have some awesome videos.

I maaaaay actually love you ;) Thank you!

I'm a wee bit obsessed myself, only I haven't gotten past youtube really. It's so hard to find decent make-up blogs! I occassionally look at www.doedeereblogazine.com, because she does some amazing stuff, but all sorts of crazy nonsense I couldn't wear outside!

I love xsparkage, she's ridiculously cute. And I pretty sure I've seen some of enkore's stuff. I can't listen to panacea, although she's really good. :D

I've tried lots of eyeliners and the best liquid one I've come across is the Bourjois liquid eyeliner marker type pencil, it's brilliant.

I find the cream consistency ones you get in pots like the mac ones are good too but I can never get them to look as good as the bourjois one. Suppose it takes a good brush and a lot of practice.

Actually can anyone recommended a great eyeliner application brush? I have a slanted one which is too soft and another which is just s straight line but it's too hard!!

Lolz, yay makeup lurve!! :D:D Yeah, a couple of the links I posted are not for everyday wear, but they inspire different color combos and such. I'll check out that link you posted. The blogs jenizzle posted are also really good, especially temptalia.

Ha, I've heard people say panacea's accent is dreadful, but I can't tell!

Edit: Doe Deere! I've seen her on another lj makeup community; she owns LimeCrime, right? She's too cute!

Oh god, her accent! I wish I could listen to her, I do, but I just can't! :pac:

Yeah she does! I WANT some of her stuff! Big mad bright colours, love it! Might order some after Christmas!... She's amazing!

That girl you posted who doesn't update much - seriously incredible! She has some serious talent!

(Sorry, I've kind of hijacked your thread a little bit :(... I am looking for a really good tutorial I saw a while ago on liquid lining though, and failing miserably :()

EDIT: Found one, not the one I wanted but it must have been deleted or something :( Anyway:

The MAC eyeliner brush is great. It's slanted and not too soft so you can get right on to the lash line. I use Bobby Brown gel liner or MAC eyeshadow in Carbon (dampen the brush before wiping in the shadow).

Thanks everyone!! Those blogs are GREAT! Looks like a lot of time being vain in front of a mirror for me :p Going to go shopping for a good brush (will look at the Mac and Benefit ones) and may treat myself to some luscious supplies. For research purposes, of course. :pac:

Thought of another site. You might already use this, but if not http://www.makeupalley.com is one of the best sites ever for reading other peoples' opinions on makeup before you spend the big bucks. Those ladies have rarely failed me! (They were right about the DiorShow Blackout I bought being shite. :()

    bobbi brown gel pot

    http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/4868/pot1lr9.gif

    or rimmel professional liquid eyeliner

    http://well.ca/images/large/products/rimmel-london-professional-liqui_1186689640_LRG.png

use with a slanted eye brush, i use chanel but once its symthetic and slanted it fine. tractice is key. the thinner the brush too makes it easier, the rimmel can be applied with a brush for a more dramatic effect

    MAC fluidline is awesome.
But for everyday use I just use that Bourjois marker pen type liner.

The trick is NOT to try and line your eye in one sweep. Do little sweeps of liner and join them together. Then you can flick it out afterwards if you wish.

GOSH do the very very best liquid eyeliners money can buy.
A whole rainbow of colours, and they NEVER smudge.

MAC is coming out with a new collection (it might already be out) called Chill which has a pen eyeliner. I've been hearing good things about it. Might be worth a shot.

How was the color payoff? I've heard some people say it's nice and dark and others say it's opaque.

Gosh eyeliners are fantastic - but I would not recommend the extreme art ones for beginners, as one mistake and yer fecked as they are impossible to remove! The pencils are fine though :pac:

I only tried it on the back of my hand but it seemed pretty dark to me!
It has amazing reviews on makeupalley...I think i'll buy one next week.

If you're trying to do the flick, use a medium coloured eye shadow and slanted brush first to make an outline then go over the line with the eye liner. Easier to take off the eye shadow if you make mistakes!

If doing a smokey eye effect, as someone else has already said, bring the line of under your eye up so the top line can meet it. It will give you a better idea to where the top line should go. (if that makes any sense????).

And just practice! You'll learn your eye shape and it will come naturally to you after a while. ;)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,556 ✭✭✭MizzLolly

I always have my eyes heavily lined and dark and I rarely use liquid eyeliner. For me, a soft kohl pencil to do the main outline and then a (good quality) eyeliner brush dusted with some black powder to fill it in does the job perfectly. So you get cat eyes but with a nice smoky effect.

*dammit.. I'm giving my secrets away* :P

Practice makes perfect. I'm 23 now and I've been doing it since I was 16 and I can't get it right all the time. Maybe practice just before you're going to bed so you can take it right off. Don't try and do it when you're under pressure, like getting ready for a night out.

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 6,817 ✭✭✭jenizzle

I agree with Pythia. I've been doing it for years and I very rarely get the flicks to match each other or one line is thicker than the other. Take some time, get yerself some cheaper liner (Bourjois or Rimmel), some cotton buds and a cleanser to tidy up the mistakes. I used to do the liner before eyeshadow till I got more confident at it and found a way that suited me. Even little things like the angle your mirror is at, lighting etc can help (it helped me greatly cos I wear glasses and am blind without them!)

You have to just keep trying. You can't expect to perfect the technique in a couple of days - I've been at it for ages and am still only getting around to getting it reasonably straight and even! When I get a chance I play around with my liquid liner, without doing full make-up, just the liner, and it has definitely helped.

I saw a corrector pen (I THINK it was by Max FActor, but that could be totally made up) which I imagine would help immensely when you make a small mistake and need to correct it without wrecking your whole eye-makeup. Maybe give it a try?

bourjois liquid eyeliner is brilliant.... only 7euro and easy to use!!!

Can anyone recommend an eyeliner for sensitive eyes? I wear contacts and find that the liner kind of leaks into my eyes and it's really sore. Then I can't see and have to take my lenses out! I've been using a Mac one. It looks great but the sore eye thing has put me off.

my eyes are like that aswell.... boujois is good for them!...(only for the top though) .. when i want to do the bottom i sharpen an eyeliner pencil then paint some of the liquid eyeliner onto it and then use the pencil on the bottom of my eye..works a treat every time:D

I love love love liquid liner, my usual is Rimmel Exaggerate Liquid Liner, it's pretty much the best for me. I doubt there's a huge amount of variation anyway, although I did try a L'oreal one which looked the same but was quite flakey! I'm completely used to liquid liner and wear it almost every day. I recently got MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack and have been learning how to use it, I find it much more difficult to control than liquid liner! Getting better but still not 100% comfortable. Anyone else have the same problem?
