GPS-ing your kids

Was having a discussion with a friend of mine today about GPS-ing your kids, as in putting a small tracking device in their shoe or school bag or something. He was all up for it if he could afford it.

While I can see where he's coming from I have to admit that the idea seems crazy to me.

    What do you boardies think?

All the wiley kidnapper has to do is go over the child with one of those microchip scanners that vets use to see if the chip in a pet dog is working. Then cut it out, and stamp on the chip!

(Microchips are sometimes placed in dogs in case they go missing and have no collar, and need to be id'ed)

Well your bieng GPS'd by your mobile phone and most modern cars are aswell and with the new Google G1 you can pick out someones number and find out where they are using google maps (which is scary) But it's the in your face "hey look Im tracking my kid" thing i would be apprehensive of

News Just In, GPS-ing replaces responsible parenting.

    Just a GPS?.

Fook that, if I ever have kids I will be going the whole hog. Feelgood jnr will be complete with a drinks holder and all.

And when he walks backwards he will make a beeping noise like a forklift.

But do kidnappers carry that kind of thing?

    I think it's a good idea, wouldn't see a problem with it :)

How it replaces responsible parenting is beyond me... It seems to do the opposite if you ask me.

The idea of actually implanting the thing never came up, that is a horrible thought.

The reason th topic came up was we got talking about the McCanns and other children that go missing...... still think its a bad idea though.

But just like burglar alarms wouldn't the deterrent be the greatest benefit? You not only put the chip in your kid, you also give them a jacket or a badge or something that says "I am microchipped."

The other thing is that once the chip is removed and crushed, the parent would become aware of this and they would know the time and place the child went missing and also that "he didn't just wander off". It might speed up the search operation significantly.

Some mobile phones allow you to be GPS tracked. Some modern cars (and nowhere near most) allow you to be tracked. It takes a fairly determined person to do either though so it's not that much of a concern unless you're paranoid imo.

I think you need to elaborate on the 'or something' part!

    EDIT:Actually, leave it. :)

Hmmmm...there are ways around that. Fire an electomagnetic pulse at the school before the kidnapping.

Buy a microchip from one street wise urchin, and swap the microchip between him and the kidnapee.

Kidnap the parents and force the child to pay the ransom.

There was ads on the tv for this type of thing (although I can't remember if it was for kids or items) in the states the last couple of times I was there.

Hulk Hogan had his daughters car fitted with a GPS from some company for surveillance for an episode of hogan knows best. That was a bit messed up. I remember they were tracking her from their laptop. The ****ed up thing was that this was legal and bought from a company.

It raises a lot of questions about the use of these things, is it ok to GPS your kids, your gf, your wife. If it's ok for 1 its ok for the rest imo.

EDIT; GF and wife thing in relation to cheaters(suspected)

Thus breaking the chip and alerting the people/software tracking the chip that something's wrong.
Buy a microchip from one street wise urchin, and swap the microchip between him and the kidnapee.

Possible but any decent implementation of such a chip would react when exposed to air/tampered with/removed and alert the parents.

The point is these things act as a deterrent. It's much easier to just kidnap the non chipped kid than blast the school with an EM pulse or involve a street urchin who will be only too happy to double cross you for the reward money.
Kidnap the parents and force the child to pay the ransom.

    :D

Don't kidnappers in the movies cut off ears and fingers as routine kidnapping SOP? Likewise, they would have experience in removing the chip in a biopsy/fleshy chunk sample. There'll be tears no doubt, but that's the air part solved. You could then feed the flesh/chip chunk to a dog and set it loose as a decoy.

I'm giving this too much thought!

I agree that being "Big Brother" is quite the opposite of responsible parenting. A parent should be able to trust the child and vise versa.

I paid for college in the US by working retail, and we sold a GPS that you could hide in your kid's car for about $300, and they were always sold out. Also, for it to work, you had to pay a subscription that was anywhere from $100-$300 per year. You could set the device to send messages to your phone if, for example, you child is going over 70mph as well.

Conspiracy Theorist MCMLXXXIII: they are getting us "used to" being tracked so someday the NWO Police State can track us all!

Practical MCMLXXXIII: if someone really wanted to kidnap your kid, they would just cut the chip out first, whether they had to go to the back of your neck or just cut off your hand. If they really wanted to kidnap your child - they would do it!

An electronic device can be easily tampered with and in this case the signal can be blocked with nearly anything. (GPRS/GSM signals could be used also i suppose, but regardless)

Someone said above, you would be alerted if the chip is tampered with, i'm sorry but by that stage your child is gone. If a kidnapper has got to that stage (removing a chip from under the skin), then your child will be dead also.

As a deterrent, so you get one of these in your child and write "this kids been chipped" on his forehead? Of course the poor kids wont be able to afford the marker to write that on their own heads

These are not a good idea, i guarantee it would lead to (in a select few):
    "where's little johnny"
"sure he's got one of them chips in him, he's grand"

While I don't approve of tagging kids with GPS chips, if you do go down that road, please, please only tag your own kids.

So don't opt for it, it's not like you are being forced to add someone? I wouldn't like for others to know exactly where I am either...

I remember that episode , he had Brian Knobbs helping him.
Though given Hogan's rep with women , you can see where he was going with it.:D
