Best Car for €400

Can anyone suggest any cars on the internet for under €400? Or even suggestions of what I can get for that

Don't live in Ireland (thank f$ck) so VRT isn't a problem, it can be UK, France or Germany

Absolutely no criteria other than it must be in a good enough condition to drive on the roads for a couple of days non-stop, left hand drive preferred, want something that I wouldn't buy as my everyday car, ie running costs don't matter in the slightest

It is interesting alright with such a tight budget, but possible I believe, especially as I;m not buying it in Ireland

Rental would be about the same price as buying at this budget, I want to keep it for a few weeks so it will be much cheaper if I can get one for €400, it's a bit of a challenge with a few friends, a Top Gear type one

It's quite possible if, and only if, you know what you're doing. Out of interest, what makes you think your €400 would go further in UK/F/D than here?

Just thought car prices were cheaper every where else than here

But I don't live in Irl so won't be buying the car there anyway, as ferry would increase costs, and I would prefer a LHD

Something like that is exactly what I want, I am a student so won't be driving a big BMW anytime soon, but €400 is the very max on what I can spend

I cannot seem to link to them but just search on there. Its no good searching for any car under 500 as there are lots of dud ads on there. but just search for big old stuff like those. Lots of old rover 800 s etc, Audi 100, Mercedes e class

No offence ...but that's a bit of a stupid question.

400€ is the kind of money most cars would make if you broke them up and sold them for parts.

So the likelyhood that a car that is being sold for 400 or less has at least something wrong with it is fairly high.

You might get lucky and find the odd gem out there ...but only by standing in front of it (or possibly even lying under it) and not from someone shouting a name/model on boards or linking to some add.

Alot of these cars could be being sold by owners who know there are faults and may not get through the next MOT without spending alot of money but the OP only needs the car for a few weeks so if he could find a reasonable car with a month or so MOT, it could well be perfect for what he needs it. For example, A failing cat on an old 7 series will make it scrap but would be fine until MOT runs out.

This is basically turn-key motoring that we have here that you will find with tax and MoT in the UK for under 500 quid sterling. I personally can testify to their capability of covering a long journey around Europe in utmost comfort and reliability. This one also has the added advantage of auto and very low mileage with service history.

Definitely a car I suggest you look in to.

The best car you can get for €400 imo is one that gets you home from the place you bought it, without you or the car dying in the process.

Now I know it's slightly over budget but by the time you buy it Sterling will have fell a little and most people knock 10% off the asking price when offered cash

I sold a 92 audi 80 2.0 petrol about 5 years ago for €325. Would go for ever. Needed cold start valve but had a few months nct so it would be a runner for a roadtrip at about €400 at that time. So it is not impossible. body & interior was pretty much perfect. Got rid as it was sitting for a couple of months on side of road in housing estate in dublin and was afraid the scumbags might start smashing it up.

How does insurance work on something like that? Do you just transfer your own from another country? I only ask because the cost of insuring old cars here is just silly, and we have stupid laws that say we are part of Europe, yet we cannot buy cheap insurance in other countries for use here.

Depending on where you live look for polish/latvian cars. I've seen a few decent golfs/bmw 3series/opels etc for sale here LHD for very small money. If you're just road trippin it up the reg probably won't matter a whole load if you get pulled.

I just sold two of my cars for €500 each as I had to clear my driveway in advance of the arrival of my classic merc so you can be lucky like that but if I was planning a cross continent trip I would steer clear of such 'bargains' - they will end up costing you a lot more eventually. :eek:

Just an update, have decided to buy the car in England, as transport costs to Europe would be cheaper, so anyone want to provide any suggestions within 50 miles or so of Stansted Airport?

As an aside, cars in France and Germany seem to be much more expensive than in England or even here, which I found very surprising given that they drive on the right
