I think it is a nice video, she can certainly sing. Nice song for xmas. Pity they didn't put more of an effort into getting it into the shops. Well done to the winner.

Should it be No 1? 1 vote

Yeah I was thinking that myself.

    Don't be so mean!

I think she can sing. I will now have to even out the poll. You made me do it!

Hahahahahahahahahaha, I actually laughed so much at this.
RTE is barely credible for anything made by itself, But TG4??

Jeez this was a train wreck waiting to happen.

I always feel TG4 is far more credible then RTE, the problem with this show lies with the fact that RTE commissioned this show for TG4. TG4 really should just be given the money rather then have RTE distribute the money for them :) (TG4 does have its own commissions and is independent from RTE). I just like the song not so much the show.

In fairness she didn't ruin Hallelujah.

Alex didn't RUIN hallelujah, She has even gotten better sales than Leona.
I am very glad for her and it is not like she had a say in the matter to sing it or not but anyway,

Yes this woman can sing good(for TG4 Talent comps)! but dear god what an awful video/song.

Are you Louis Walsh? or perhaps Simon Cowell? Worst argument ever. Sorry. Xfactor is the biggest show, they will always get the number one nothing to do with Alex. I am sure she will have a career, she will just have to be smart.

Oh I was just saying that point.. I didn't say it as an argument!
Yes but she deserves that number 1 unlike Leon Jackson last year...
There's noting else out there good enough to be a Christmas number 1 imo.

No smartness needed she has talent and Simon did seem to take a fancy to her so I think she will be fine if she can charm him more.

The song is IMO a simple song that Alex and the production team (TBH I blame the production team on this one) have turned the song into a big flash pop song with a big flash ending, I don't think it was intended that way. While Alex may deserve the Number 1, the song did not. It would have been unlikely for her not to get a number one as you said Leon Jackson got one last year.
Sorry OTT. But sure I just want to see what people thought of the other song :) not going so well for me :(

Yes but I don't see an OTT pop song, I think Alex made it her own and exceptionally well for an amateur.
I feel that of course it is pop but what else did people expect yano?
I can feel Alex's passion and soul in Hallelujah and she has brought the song to more people and has gotten Jeff Buckely and Leonard Cohen into the Top 3 and Top 30.

Music is for enjoyment and people shouldn't get so offended by a song/cover, A cover is the biggest form of flattery!

But yes well I don't think it would fair well I heard it once and that because in all honestly I just caught the last minute on TV.

Any update on this, what were the final sales/position. I didn't see it anywhere in the top 50.

The failure is bit embarrassing for TG4... how are they going to sell another series of this at this rate.

I don't think it is that embarrassing for TG4 at all. Of course it would have helped had they released the song nationally and got it on to a few radio services.

I don't think TG4 should do these types of reality shows to be honest. I think they are better at the more real reality shows like Underdogs.

It sounds like she says 'the sweet silver song of Allah'????

Adequate voice, good use of the choir.........wouldn't dream of spending money on it.

Reasonably OK version, but too fast; nothing wrong with it, but definitely not good enough to reach #1.....saw a few episodes of this and the singer is a lot better than comes across in this.

And yeah, it annoys me that the Christmas #1 slot has been hijacked by cover-versions and "talent" shows, and even more so that we lap up the UK imported crap and completely diss any homegrown stuff.

I'd put this roughly on a par with the X-Hallelujah - i.e. neither should have been in contention for #1, based on a combination of their origins, the Cowell/Walsh cloning factory (someone tell me the difference between Leona Lewis & Alexandra Burke, or Westlife & JLS, please) and the fact that they're cover versions

The level of songwriting talent and performers that's available in Ireland alone is phenomenal, so I can't see why they can't revert to having the competition to WRITE A BLOODY SONG, not "pick someone to sing it while we rework and ruin an existing one".

P.S. Very restrictive poll options, OP - would have picked option 2 but I see nothing wrong with having Irish in it, and a video has no bearing on whether or not a song or singer is good, and option 3 was COMPLETELY out of the question because it implied that Alexandra Burke's version of Hallelujah deserved the number one spot.

I would like to see a reality show (aka a documentry) about a group of songwriters writting a song for the winner of a talent show, while also running another reality show (aka a talent show) looking for new singers.

Yes the options are a bit OTT TBH and while I have no problems with the Irish language some people have a chip on there shoulder about it, so that option was for them :) I was of course being a tiny bit sarcastic with the poll. Really it was a Yes no poll either go for yes or no! The first and last options.

I guess you're right, it isn't really that embarrassing for TG4, it's not like they have to make another series or refer to the failure in other shows. I think it is probably more embarrassing for Mary Lee herself, like if someone asked her where her single charted for example.

The song was released on ITunes but got no promotion other than the TV show, they could have at least got her a slot on the Late Late and then it would have sold a bit.

Even on POP4, Sile, Xpose or TTV. But then this is Ireland where even the winners of YAS had a hard time getting on mainstream TV!

I actually thing it is great for Mary Lee, why? well because she won the show out of a huge number of contestants, she possibly got futher then she thought she would, they didn't build up the prize (lets face it we all knew it wouldn't get to No. 1, channel, audience etc not just how good/bad the song is), she got a video out of it and at her age its a real success in the industry. Tiny pond, tiny drop, huge ocean! Still respectable. But then I always support the underdog.

I would say she got more out of this show then most of the winners of XFactor and YAS.

    Also her happiness is genuine.
