Updated and an hour later I got a darkened screen and the dreaded 'you need to restart your computer....' message. Haven't seen that in a long time. Hope it isn't a bad omen

all good here, but i was hoping for four finger trackpad support (on a 2008 macbook pro).

That is normal for a system upgrade, ie: when the 10.5.x number changes

    Same here, all seems normal.

Mail is crashing when I'm trying to view my unread or even read RSS feeds.
Tried selecting a few different one's.

    Anyone else?

Mail is okay for me at moment, but I have been experiencing frequent crashes/unexpected quits with it ever since upgrading to Leopard. I've given up trying to fix it but I suspect it's IMAP related. Maybe the "overall performance and reliability fixes" in this update will correct it but I doubt it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,731 ✭✭✭Type 17

Mail is ok for me and hadn't given any troubles since about 10.5.3 when it was intermittently losing (hiding) my RSS feeds.

10.5.6 seems to have fixed a problem that I was having where iTunes music streaming to the speakers on my Airport Express would break down after 1-2 minutes of playing time, but worked fine if I used Airfoil to stream sound to the speakers (from any app, including iTunes). This had been occurring since the Airport update a few months ago.

Aperture crashing every five minutes since the update. This is beginning to feel like Windows, Apple WTF are you at?

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 7,486 ✭✭✭Red Alert

Not now a happy camper with 10.5.6:

Time machine is showing "Backup delayed" when on my network at work - it used to know that the time capsule is only available at home.

I use my machine with the lid shut at home... it used to automatically sleep when I pulled the power plug. Now it doesn't.

    Not pleased at all.

According to Engadget, Gizmodo and others, it also completely breaks DFU mode for the iPhone/iPod Touch, making a jailbreak impossible - I think I'm going to avoid this one for the time being... I thought DFU mode is used for a legitimate recovery as well though, if a firmware updates goes bad, etc. So what happens if you find yourself in that situation? Apple just tells you to f**k off?

Sorry for your trouble, but just to confirm, Aperture is still working for me.

PS: Did everyone use the standalone installer or did you use the auto update?

Apple's latest update to its Leopard operating system, OS X 10.5.6, appears to be creating more problems than it's fixing on users' Macs.
A day after the software was released via Apple's download service, users flooded the company's online support forum with hundreds of complaints about the upgrade. Most centered around OS freezes and so-called "Blue Screens of Death."

"The latest version of Leopard (10.5.6) downloaded automatically via Software Update. However, when I attempted to install, the process hangs on 'configuring setup,'" wrote a user logged in under the name Davald.
"I have owned dozens of Apple computers since my first purchase in 1977, and I also have the OS X 10.5.6 update problem," reported a user named Jim Needham.

User 'Dr. Nick' said, "Have to add that my iMac is playing up. Upgraded, and can't get past the screen where you type your password, the screen goes blue, and it cycles through a slightly different shade of blue to take me to the login screen again."

Another, going by the online handle Xapplimatic, said his problems weren't limited to a single machine. "All 7 of my Macs (Intel & PPC) are all hung on the installation. None of them have gotten past "configuring installation" and it's been over an hour... I'm really worried," he wrote.

Others reported that installation of the update caused problems with Bluetooth connections, the Safari Web browser, sound settings, energy-saving settings, and a host of other Mac features.

Apple on Monday cautioned users to proceed cautiously with the update. "You may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications installed, or if you have modified the operating system through other means," Apple said in a note on its Web site.

Users could also have trouble "if you have moved applications from their default locations," Apple said. The free download for existing Leopard users was supposed to offer a wealth of performance, convenience, and security updates.

iChat users supposedly will see fixes for an issue that causes an encryption alert to appear in the chat window and for a glitch where users that set their status to "invisible" are automatically logged out of iChat.

For gamers, the update includes modifications designed to improve performance of a number of games and fix image distortions that occur with some ATI graphics cards.

Mail users should see a fix for a problem that causes messages identified as junk to remain in the inbox, while Mobile Me fans are supposed to get faster synching for contacts, calendars, and bookmark lists.

Graphics pros will get improved performance with Adobe's C3 application suite, according to Apple. Mac OS X 10.5.6 is, among other things, also designed to improve performance and fix bugs in Apple's Time Machine archiving system, Safari Web browser, DVD Player, and TrackPad portable input system.

Apple on its Web site has published a full list of the issues that the update is designed to address.

Apple debuted OS X 10.5, or Leopard, last year. Its slick interface, along with some business-friendly security features, have helped Apple make inroads against Microsoft Windows in consumer and business computing markets.

Think I might hold off on downloading!

Yet to have an issue...BUT I downloaded the combined update and i've been doing very lightweight stuff since the update (Read as: Internet> FF3/Safari. IM>AdiumX. Watching a few movies>Movist. and a little bit of data transfer) so this story might change next week...

ok all is not so rosy anymore, everything was fine until a few minutes ago, i put my MBP to sleep and it didn't wake up so i restarted it and the same thing happened again. Now i've had this happen before but found the solution to be making sure the power wasn't plugged in when putting to sleep and waking it. Anyone else hear anything about this problem?

I was wrong. RSS feeds aren't what's broken. Mail now fails to open any mail, feed item. Boo! My first properly bad update experience. :(

Is it completely failing to open stuff or is it taking a very long time to open/preview items? The latter is what happened to me yesterday. Try repairing disk permissions, I did this after the update and my problems disappeared, I'm not sure if it was actually this that fixed it though. Its worth a shot anyway.

My bad. A mail bundle GPGMail was causing it, latest version doesn't crash Mail. :o

If anyone is still having trouble with Mail, here is a fix from Apple

Only problems I've had so far were downloading the update. Thanks to a dodgy NIC in my Smoothwall box all the downloads were failing verification. Once that was sorted everything went smoothly.

Most of the problems appearing about the web seem to be to do with a grey screen on reboot after the updates. Seems to be a problem with the .kext files for the newer nVidia graphics chips. Some people also seems to be suffering problems with 3rd party RAM expansions failing hardware tests.

Touch wood all my machines - Dual G5 PowerMac, PowerBook, MacBook Pro all behaving well.
