    client XP pro.
    server Windows server 2003.

On server, G: and C: shared out to all admins and users for full control. (we're in test)

Can remote desktop to server from client with user : pass

user has admin rights on server

start > run > \\server\g$ enter user : pass and dialog box comes back to me to log in as though the user : pass is incorrect. Double checked all sharing properties and it should be going in. Same for c$

    thoughts?

is it part of a domain if so try domain/user and then the password if not try computername/user then password

no domain, user is local to server. when login dialog box comes back its populated with servername\user (as I expected) but that doesnt work either.

servername\user and then pass in login dialog box. comes straight back to me.

so.. just set up a new user, gave full user + admin rights, dropped 'n recreated the share, still no joy, grrrr.

Whats the service that should be running for shares, is it just that "server" service, its running anyway.

this has to be something simple...

Yea thats it, sounds like something silly alright, have you rebooted the pc or tried a different one?

Can you do a share in the opposite direction?

try and map it as a network drive in DOS and you'll get an error that should tell you more.

    from the command line type:

    net use g: \\server\g$

and let us know what errors you get. from memory error 5 and error 57 (or maybe 52?) are permissions related, which is what it normally is, somewhere along the line.

    oh, this is annoying

tried the net use command, I get asked for user : pass.

    C:\Program Files\PuTTY>net use g: \\<IP>\g$ /user:<servername>\username password

    System error 1326 has occurred.

Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.

tried it with the servername and the IP,
tried it with the servername befor the username,
tried with and without username and the password in the command
reset password on server to something simple, remote desktop to server ok, but failed on net use with user/pass typed on command line..

so then tried, lock account on server, tried "net use" again and got "account locked out" so I know its seeing it. Unlocked account, retried "net use" got unknown username/password again as above.
