Now really is the time to buy- there is a margin of opportunity there with current stock, as the GBP prices will all be going up in the near future.

Nope, though as I'm off to NY in January, I'm waiting for the Dollar to hit $1.50 :)

    Assos Airjack 851, Wiggle Euro204, £176.

Should be Euro 186. They're not giving you the benefit it seems.

Yep, now's the time to buy. Probably a false economy to wait for further falls as the cost of inputs for British retailers will start to rise once current stocks run out.

I think they still bill your card in sterling, so you should get whatever the official rate is??

In that case, I think I'll go ahead and order.
    Thanks.

Wiggle do bill in sterling, their displayed rate is just a bit out of date it would seem. Sterling is very volatile at the moment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,860 ✭✭✭TinyExplosions

Also, they charge 21% VAT on goods to ireland...

Good point. They may be factoring that in to their display pricing.

The wheels I want have gone down around €150 in the past few months. Still a bit too early for me to make that purchase though. Sigh.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 4,034 Mod ✭✭✭✭Planet X

Just hit the "Buy" button. No mention of 21%vat.
Correct, it said I'd be billed in GBP.

No, they display the sterling price including the Irish VAT if you have selected that you are from Ireland. Hence the frequency of "funny looking" (non-rounded) prices in sterling.

without going to much into it, the ECB have said they will not lower rates any time soon, while the Bank of England are due to reset rates again in early jan, lowering them again. all in all this will further strengthen the euro against the pound, maybe even above parity for us. so the next few weeks (maybe months) will be excellent for buying bikes, or anything, from the uk

Yes, but UK retailers have to source most of their stock abroad. So, once current stocks run out, Wiggle will have to get their Assos jackets from Switzerland for a higher price than they were paying. You'll only get the low prices for short while.

This is indeed the case; Wiggle for example had a string of price rises last April (on the Focus bikes in particular) after the last big Sterling fall. They adjusted the RRP in accordance with the new exchange rate but then ate some of it in the form of discounts. You need to get the current stock before it runs out!

Yes indeed. The Charge Plug (which I really want to get) is down from €455 to €436 (that's inclusive of my platinum discount). I think they were about €500 a few months back. Very tempting but  cannot  spend:eek:more:eek:money this month!!!

Hopefully Santa is bringing Wiggle vouchers...

I ordered my rollers from Wiggle and saved a fortune £127 (£5 off with caroline.ie's code) and paid €144. A word of advice though always pay in GBP if paying by credit card as the credit card companies usually give a more up to date and most of the time the best exchange rate.
Now just going back to between the door frame........!

Wiggle chucked in a free multitool with my last order (which included a bike). Ironically, the order also included....a multitool.

So now I am awash with allen keys.

That's only the frameset though, but you would also get a $300 rebate (they've just announced it pdf link), making it even cheaper!

Ordered a Castelli Spunto jacket and Castelli Leggerezza bib tights.
The Fred'ism is that I wear a pair of dhb overshoes (practical and good) but I have to upgrade to make the top ten Freds? No?

    Are overshoes frowned upon?

@unionman- that is just the frameset, I got the last! built one for around the €3,500 mark. Cracking deal though considering cost of the DA build in the US is $7,600, in Europe around €7,200. I shudder to think what it would cost in little old .ie. For the extra money over the frame alone I'm getting:

    - Full Dura-Ace 7800 groupset
    - Mavic R-SYS wheels (wouldn't be my top choice, but hey, 1350g)
    - Ritchey WCS finishing kit (inc carbon bars & seatpost)

So I will be moving onto 39/53 as required to be a real bike snob in this forum. I look down on all you guys with compacts.* Triple, never heard of it.

Not sure about the Cayo but probably keeping it for the moment, not sure I would get the money for it that would justify parting with it. May revise opinion when I have the new bike for a while.

*Will probably do the W200 on the double but would plan on fitting a compact for the Marmotte :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,318 ✭✭✭✭Raam

Blorg, that's gonna be a sweet build when you get it. Any ideas when she'll be ready?

Savage bike. How many bikes to you actually have now?

Be interested in hearing how you get on with the R-Sys.

The Trek 1000 is a very descent bike.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,995 ✭✭✭✭blorg

    The Archon will be #6.

To be honest the R-SYS wheels would probably not have been my first choice and I doubt I would have bought them if I was shopping around for a ~€1,000 wheelset. Despite getting some good reviews they don't seem to have really taken off and the aerodynamics are reportedly terrible (don't know if I would be going fast enough for this to make a major difference mind.)

Having said that though all the stuff you get in the build seemed like a bargain overall for the price difference between the build and the (even similarly discounted) frameset. Full Dura-Ace group, the wheels and the WCS finishing kit made sense for that money.

@Signal_rabbit- as everybody's favourite cycling hero (:D) says, it's not about the bike; I doubt this purchase will make me any faster! My first road bike was also a Trek 1000 BTW and I found it very fast and nippy.
