any reason for such a small size?

1/2/4gb cards are pretty cheap nowadays

their not for me..my parents are computer illiterate and dont like ipods etc,so i thought about using small drives as albums if that makes any sense. For example whatever band they like they can have the 15 songs from the album on a small pen drive and then stick it into a hifi to play

in that case it would be better to spend 20c on a blank cd to be honest

they take too long to burn tbh..

no i'm afraid it doesn't. The procedure for putting music on a small drive is exactly the same as a big one.

In fact a small drive would be worse because if they have more than a few songs they'd have to keep going back to the computer to switch them where a big one could hold all their music

I'm assuming the OP wants one drive per album - the old "if you want to listen to the Fureys you plug in this one but if you want the Killers, it's this one here, mater and pater". No fiddling around with menus then for people who just can't use them, it's as simple as putting two bricks of lego together. Silly as it may seem, not all of the world is computer literate and some people aren't ever going to be.

Hence the one drive per album thing, and with the assumption that the lower the capacity the lower the price (which is reasonable). And 64 or 128 would be right right size, depending on bitrate obviously.

None of us have been of any help with the original question, which was "where can I buy these low-capacity by current standards drives and where can I get them cheap?"

Looking at my usual outlets for usb drives, none of them seem to sell the comparatively tiny ones any more and even the price difference for anything between 512 to 2GB is tiny or non-existent so I can't be of any help. I've seen companies give out 128MB drives at graduate fairs though so they are at least still being made and sold somewhere. Might be easiest to have a look on ebay, pick someone who's obviously offloading them one by one (some of them seem to have 512s available at about 3 euros) and strike a deal for buying whatever number you want. Dabs have 2GB drives for about 4 euros but you should be able to do better with an ebay seller offloading end of line stuff.

Ah right that makes slightly more sense i suppose. But still the cheapest you'd realistically get one is about e5, 25 times more expensive than a cd-r, which would take about 1 minute to burn a single album. And cds are easier to store and display than a stack of memory sticks, especially for computer illiterate people

Just use cds tbh. I'd understand spending 25 times more if this way was dramatically better but except for an extra few seconds spent making the cd it sounds like more hassle to me

Seeing as you can get 1gb keys for about 5 euro online, trying to get 128mb ones might be somewhat impossible. Ebay probably the best best. Awhile ago DCU were giving 512mb keys free with their prospectus.

And for convenience the cd's would definitely be miles easier though.

Even the illiterate should have no problem navigating an iPod. Im no fan of apple but navigation on those things is a snap.

When i say computer illiterate,i really mean it,plus their eyesight isnt the best so small writing on a tiny device wouldnt be great for them as well.

you know that you can fit 128mb onto a 1gig drive right? ;)
what i mean is, you can buy a cheap 1 gig drive and partition it to just show 128mb.

one point tho, if they cant read the writing on an ipod, how are they going to read the writing on <2cm usb key?

Whats the point of paying more when your not gonna use the extra memory..i could use a 1 gig stick for all their music but then they would have like 300 songs on one thing, and hifis only way of sorting stuff is just to go back or forward...

Ill let them know what album it is and they can label it whatever way they want

1 gig sticks are about a fiver.
if your looking for 64 meg sticks your best bet would be to contact elara or maxburns direclty and see if they can source them for you. there likely to be dearer than the 1 gig sticks tho
