Work searches

A good friend asked me if it was legal to be searched at work by employers.

He turned up for work yesterday and was told that he had to sign a contract to say that he was allowing himself to be searched from now on.
If he didn't sign (which he didn't yet) his wages from next week would be held back till he DID sign.

Can anyone tell me (I will be passing on any info) what the legality of his situation?

An employer can undertake such activity but docking pay would not be a correct approach. Legal advice is not available here, but in the context of procedure this seems to be wrong.

Employer has no legal authority whatsoever to search workers nor can security operatives do so on behalf of the employer. No ifs, no buts, no exceptions, no can do.
