I'm glad Coltart is back, good honest hard working player with no bull**** about him.

Poor old Monty, wouldn't like to be the air hostess looking after him on his way home.

Yeah he was certainly a loss to the tour in recent times. He's one of the ones you always like to see doing well and by all accounts he's very friendly when anyone I know have said (a possibly drunken) hello to him in a pub or anything.

He grew up just a few miles away from me and is a very humble, down to earth kind of guy. His biggest problem is consistency. Struggles to get through a week without one distructive round. Hopefully this week he can keep it going.

Hopefully he'll come to the Irish Open in May.

Great finish by McGrane, -13, 4th on his own in Quatar. €94k, not a bad start to the year !

Talking of (mc)Grane ... was it just me or was there a Sky Sports obsession with grain in the commentary for the Qatar Masters this weekend? I have never heard as many comments about the various shades of colour of the green, the 'nap', the possible effects on the ball blah blah blah. While all true enough I thought I'd head butt the telly if they mentioned the grain of the greens any more.

:D I noticed that too yesterday. I was sitting there saying to myself, "i never really look at the grain or consider it when playing".

I did notice on those greens at the weekend though that there was a clear difference in different parts of the green. i.e. dark and light patches. I can only assume the grain was more evident on those greens that usual.

That said, all week the commentators were banging on about how they'd never seen greens as smooth or as true before.

As far as I know, you'll only get 'grain' on greens with a particular types of grasses... not what we get over here?
[edit] Grain (only on coarse-bladed grasses -- see note)
Note: Some strains of grass have grain (blades growing in the same direction) that affects the way the ball rolls. This is becoming much less of an issue with newer and better strains of grass that hold up well in hotter climates.
    Some general help with grain:
    1. it mainly affects the ball as the ball slows down
    2. the ball will be influenced in the direction that the grain grows
    3. it usually grows toward the setting sun or toward the closest body of water
    4. you can usually see the grain either by the shininess of the grass (shiny = grain is going away from you; dull = grain is coming toward you) or by looking at the cup (brown or dead looking side of the cup is the direction the grain is going)

Yeah when the tour is in Abu Dhabi, Qatar etc they're always banging on about the grain as it's far more evident with the grass used at these courses...

Mc Ilroy in with a 64.
    Mc Dowel -4 after 15
    Maybin -2 after 2

Only a matter of time for McIlroy, he could be a multiple winner this season if he holds up this form.

Is it just me or have prize funds gone down from previous years? The Dubai tournament is fairly prestigious, i'd have thought it would have closer to €500,000 for the winner. Anyway . . .

Great to see McIlroy at the top. Think i'll put a few quid on him in the matchplay.

Its the 2nd biggest prize fund so far this year. The prize money is gone up this year actually from last year. You might be thinking of the prizes in Dollars as the prize money is often quoted in Dollars and if you look back over the years there has been a nice difference in the prize fund from year to year most likely due to the fluctuation in the exchange rate between dollar and Euro.

€5 on McIlory at 10-3 with PP. He had alot of birdie puts this morning but nothing fell for him. If it does go his way, he'll be untouchable.

I'd have to agree with that. I'm not sure I have ever seen a young golfer hit the ball quite as well as he does. Granted I'm only watching golf regularly about 5/6 years but he just never seems to miss a shot. Awesome ball-striking.

    It's Rory's time to win.

+1. Did you see his approach to the 7th green this morning just before Sky ended their transmission. His ball was buried in 3 inches of rough 164 yards out, and he really had to muscle it advance it towards the green. He swung at it so hard his right foot came up off the ground as he struck the ball. The ball flew through the air bang on line and left him with a 15 footer for birdie. Sky ended their coverage at that point so I'm not sure if he dropped the putt. Will pick it up again at 8pm this evening.

The most impressive part of that was the fact his right foot was off the ground, his weight all over the left side as he finished the shot and yet he wasn't even the tiniest bit off balance... Quite scary... This kid could be anything...

Golf Night on Sky were waxing lyrical about *that* shot and Mc Ilroy's performance tonight. Although it's possibly the biggest hex to put on a player, O' Meara [who played with Mc Ilroy during the 1st round I think] reckons he is better than Tiger was at his age. A.f.a.i.r. O' Meara spent a lot of time with Woods during his early years so it's some compliment. Also, Golf Night pundits were saying his average driving distance has gone from 275 to 285 to 300 odd over the last few years. Apparently some ppl on the tour have been commenting that he seems to gain 15 yards every year as he grows up! Frightening talent.

I whacked €5 on him to win the Masters a while back, before he qualified through his top 50 spot at 200/1. He is now 50/1 and in the top 23 on Paddypower.com. I'm rubbing my hands at the prospect. :P

mc ilory gone six clear after four holes looking good

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,911 ✭✭✭✭whatawaster

McIlroy had a really difficult run from 5 to 8, dropping three shots. But he's just birdies 9, 10 and 11 to go 5 clear

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,581 ✭✭✭uberwolf

bring it home Rory. 4 clear with 8 to play.

edit 5 clear with 7 to play

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,581 ✭✭✭uberwolf

    six clear, six to play.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 362 ✭✭postalservice

He birdies 9,10,11,12 and 13 while leading on a Sunday.

Pretty good for someone who's never won a pro event before.

Anyone know how he will stand in the world rankings if he wins?....it's a very good field so i imagine he will break into the top 20?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,516 ✭✭✭Trampas

He is in trouble now. Take the penalty and get it back in play. Take a bogey and walk on

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,512 ✭✭✭stevire

McIlroy coming off a bogey on 15, drives straight into the trees on 16... Chip out of trees did not make it safe, and has to get the fairway on his third...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,516 ✭✭✭Trampas

    1up with 1 to play.

    Goign to close

Horror show off the tee at 17, Rose birdies it, down to a 1 shot lead now with the tricky 18th to play. I hope he doesn't choke like in Switzerland last year.
