Good few weeks of golf coming up on the European Tour now that they are in Dubai etc...

6 Irish tee it up early in the morning... Harrington opening up his season (Murphy, Lawrie, McIlroy, McGinley & McGrane are the others).
Great strong fields over the next few weeks with Garcia in there too. Hopefully we'll get someone to cheer.

Nice start by Murph, 69 for -3 and currently tied 7th though he was one of the first out today... good strong finish, 4 birdies in the last 5 holes.
    Harrington -1 thru 16

Decent start by Murphy and Harrington - 1 under and 3 under respectively.

    McIlroy 2 under thru 4

    Garcia 3 under through 5

McIlroy finished off round one this morning with a couple of birdies to be joint leader on -6.
He's currently t2 on -8 thru 13 holes of round 2 with Paul Casey leading on -10... he's 7 under for his round thru 13 holes!
There's a Kiwi amateur called Danny Lee who is 7th on -7 thru 9 holes of his second round... 6 birdies, an eagle and only one bogey in his 27 holes so far.

What a cracking morning's play!! It's vintage Monty... 5 under with 1 to go of his 2nd round. Christ it would be great if he could do something this week (apart from rant and moan obviously!)

Great round from Casey - 7 under!, 10 under for the tournament and now leading.

Shaping up to be one hell of a weekend with all the big boys at the top.

nice tee shot to 6 feet for Harrington on 12. Knocked it in to go 5 under for the day. 6 under overall. Course seems to be generally playing easy today though. Calm, warm and course is still soft from the rain.

There's have to be an option for "Bad Tipper" for our resident Scotsman, Graemo! :pac: :p

Great day of golf all round. Superb rounds by Mcilroy and Harrington. Hopefully they can carry it into the weekend. Not bad for Padraig's first outing of the year!

Have this taped so will be sitting down to watch it when I get home if herself lets me....have a lesson in Carton this evening as well so it's all golf!

Watched a few minutes of McIlroy this morning and the guy is just an exceptional swinger of the club...as one of the Sky guys said after a Rory tee-shot - "look at that, perfect balance right through the shot, you get the sense he'd be able to hold that follow through position for 15 minutes with no difficulty".

  • Subscribers Posts: 4,419 ✭✭✭PhilipMarlowe

Murphy had 6 birdies but 6 damn bogeys too which is why he'd drive you mad when you follow him ;) If he had a few less bogeys he'd be nicely up there....

Anyway, he's -2 thru 8 this morning and t33, leaders are just starting out round 3

some good golf today from Casey, but nothing really going right for Padraig or Rory. Nice to have a good tournament with a few bigger names out on TV at a good time..

Awesome stuff from Casey today - 63 for 19 under!!

In his last 27 holes he's 13 under - no dropped shots. Very impressive.

Have to say, people talk about Baltray being ripped apart in May by these guys. If it's as good to watch as that this morning then bring it on!!!

65 from clarke today, tied for the lead with Jamie Kingston on -18

Clarke and Michael Hoey both finished tied 2nd in the African open, one shot behind Retief Goosen.

Wasnt a great field, some decent players (Goosen, Caberea, Richard Sterne Charl Schwartzel) but still not a bad way to start the season.

I hope Clarke can take the form into next week

73 today for Darren (+1) in Qatar. 76 for McGinley.
Murphy is leading Irishman after a 71, McGrane is -1 thru 8
Lawrie shot 72 and McIlroy is +1 thru 7

Plenty of cream at the top even at this early stage... Stenson back in form to lead on -6
    Westwood -5, Baddeley & Karlsson -4, Goosen -3, Els -2
Coltart is -4 thru 9... Bjorn and Monty both birdied the first 3 holes...
European Tour is looking so strong now.

Yep, i think we should rename this thread 'scotsmen in contention' for one week only...

Great starts by Coltart and Monty. Coltart eagled a par 4. Hopefully they can keep it going!
    McGrane 2 under thru 11.

    Totally agree, awesome field!

Coltart T1 on -6 thru 13 (4 birdies and an eagle)!
Forgot to mention Garcia in there on -2 and Scott is -2 thru 9
Boo Weekley is +2 thru 8 (awwww)

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,798 ✭✭✭Mister Sifter

Coltart and Monyt both slipped back with bogeys but sitting nicely on 5 under, 3 under respectively.

    McGrane 3-under thru 16.

Just noticed the 9th is 639 yards long... eek!

Horrible back9 from Monty... He's so frustrating to watch at times...

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,361 ✭✭✭f22

Bit of a nightmare for McIlroy too. May have a weekend off to work on the tan

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,053 ✭✭✭Adiaga 2

McGrane going nicely again -2 for today and 5under overall - T7th right now. He hit some form around this time last year too. Hope he keeps it up for weekend.

Great comeback from him today, 68 to most likely make the cut. That's a real positive that he come back from a bad first round and make the cut, even when he's not quite at his best.

I agree about Monty too - what a frustrating player he is. From a position where he looked like contending, he's now missed the cut.

Another solid round By Andy C... would be great to see him get a good finish this week. Even better for us Scots if he could win it on Burns Day on Sunday!

  • Subscribers Posts: 4,419 ✭✭✭PhilipMarlowe

McGrane very well placed in the top 5...
Fairly bunched leaderboard... Murphy is T34 on -2
Fantastic recovery by McIlroy to make the cut on level par. Monty was shocking to miss the cut, particularly after the start he got where he was -4 after 11 holes on Thursday.
Peter Lawrie needs a birdie in his last 4 holes to make the cut.. Darren Clarke needs to birdie the last 3 to make it too. McGinley certain to miss.

Would like to see Garcia make another couple of birdies, currently on -3 with 3 to play. He had a good weekend last week but again was too far adrift to mount a challenge.

Yeah he was certainly a loss to the tour in recent times. He's one of the ones you always like to see doing well and by all accounts he's very friendly when anyone I know have said (a possibly drunken) hello to him in a pub or anything.
