Maxtor 500 Gig External Hardrive from Argos

Hey, this thread is not necessarily to slate Maxtor or Argos, but after buying one of these hardrives, and after some hands on experience and searching for info on the net I thought I'd put my newfound knowledge up here for anyone that needs it.

If the drive stops working on you because of one of the following reasons:
    1) the pc doesn't recognise it when plugged in thru usb,
    2) the drive shows up in My Computer but you cannot access data or
    3) your system crashes upon plugging the drive in or trying to access files

don't fret, there's a simple resolution, its not ideal but it will save your files.

It would seem that in 99% of cases its not the drive or your pc thats at fault, its the cheap usb converter tucked away at the back of the case. Honest to God I don't know how they get away with putting this piece of crao into the case, but they do much to the annoyance of me and many more. The solution is to crack open your case, screw off the thin metal panel over the drive and plug out the conversion board at the back of the drive. Once you've done all of this you'll find that you have a Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM S300 32MB internal harddrive. The kicker is that bought online on this day it would cost you €55, and labelled as a Maxtor with a sleek case and a crap usb convertor it costs €90! Oh well!

So if you're motherboard takes the drive, and the majority do, stick it into your pc, run the checkdisk function by right clicking on the drive in My Computer and selecting this option from the menu. This should sort out all the system file errors on the drive, defrag and off you go!

Hope it works for ya, I was delighted to get back the 350 gigs of avi files I had on the drive, nearly humped the damn thing!!

    Good luck with it!

Read that now, yes its true that there's very little argument from argos upon returning items with a receipt, the majority of the time they'll just give you a new product without even checking the condition of the one being returned.

I probably should have been a little clearer, I could have brought the harddrive back to Argos for a replacement but as I stated I have 350 gigs of video on the drive and that would have been lost, so I had to rectify the situation myself.

But thanks for the pointer Overheal!

Cheapest 3.5 housing on komplett is €25 +12-13 post. Also argos is expensive for all electronics, it would always be cheaper online for HDs.

Cheers for the tip, my mate got one recently. Seagate have bought maxtor I think.

I used my mates, it seemed to have it own software inbuilt, e.g. icons appeared on my desktop, it seemed to install itself on, rather than just appear as a removable HD like my others. I was considering formatting it to remove this, it might have been conflicting with something on yours.

Yeah I guess argos is a little bit more expensive but you can't beat the service when ya bring something back to them and have it replaced with the latest model with no quibble at all! and the reassurance of having the extra insurance is worth the 50 squids I paid for the lcd tv. As I've said i don't wanna slate argos, I was delighted when they opened up in our town.

You're right about the software on the drive too, its got that annoying icon and some other stuff. dunno if its unique to mine but the recycle bin on the drive gave me a whole lotta hell when using it as bought, but no issues since I stuck it in the pc.

if ya do format post back and let me know if it fixed the problems, be good for future reference.

plus I have €20 on with one of my mates saying it won't!
