I'd just like to get some opinions on this guitar:
    http://www.thomann.de/ie/fender_72_telecaster.htm

My current and only electric guitar is an Ibanez rg470. It has served me well but I'm no longer a long haired, pimply 15 year old who just wants to play solos all day. I need a new axe.

I'm not gonna lie, a lot of why I like this guitar has to do with the asthetics but I am also after a nice cruchy, overdriven sound which I think this guitar could be good at providing.

I've played one in waltons, found that it gave nice clear highs and a real nice lows. The mids weren't this guitars strongpoint. I also felt action and the general setup of the guitar could have been better but that's something I adjust myself.

Should I go for this guitar?

I had a '72 Tele Deluxe RI a while back that had the same pickups. I wasn't mad on them, found them pretty flat. The main issue is that if you want to replace them there are very very few options because they're not a standard size. The only company that makes correct sized replacements are Rio Grande.

I did play another boardsies original 70's thinline recently. That was bloody awesome.

A lot of people swap the 250k pots on the reissues to 500k. Apparently that opens up the sound a lot. I tried a few reissues a couple of years ago and wasn't hugely impressed though. I really don't like the finish on the neck and fret board.

No absolutely not. If you want a bit dirt in your playing then get a solid body. Like an SG or something like that. The chamber inside the thinline teles will make the distortion muffled and thus lose clarity and control. That is just my humble opinion.

The thinline I played didn't have any problems with distortion. Ok, and very high levels you might get a bit of feedback but it certainly wasn't muddy. Another person was playing a 335 style guitar which sounded fantastic with some dirt in there. :)

My mate got one a while back, plays amazingly but I haven't heard it plugged in unfortunately...

I think that has a lot more to do with how the amp and the pickups get along than the body construction. I've heard hollow bodies with perfectly crispy distortion.

I am less humble about my opinion. :pac:

i had one,the pickups aren't a patch on the 70's ones (different magnets used)
sold it as when i EQ'ed it to work with my amp,it then made my single coil tele sound like ass,and all my pedal settings too

(i never changed the pots though)

it played great though and had some lovely overdriven tones when dialed in right

Played it again tonight at a jam, amazing guitar... The feedback it give is really nice, fun to play around with... No problems handling distortion, it sounds great...

Its a pretty sweet guitar actually gives much fatter tone than the 72 deluxe due to the body. Personally I love the humbucker pickups on the reissues they give you that warm bright tone and then a smooth fat overdrive when you use the right pedal.
