How was your 2008 photographically speaking?

    Mine was interesting.

I finally gained focus, excuse the pun, on what I wanted to do photographically. Got the equipment I needed and more importantly god rid of what I don't need.

Made a three year plan, of which year one has gone as I'd hoped for and I'm now in a position to go on to the more difficult years 2 and 3.

I'm happy with what I took photographically, got my webiste up and started my studies.

So thats me, how about you .......

Pretty good. I learned a lot, got some new gear, traveled a bit and shot lots of photos :)

Mine was what you could only describe as shameful. I lost all motivation, failed to reach every goal, and I'm fairly sure my skills have actually DECREASED over time.
Roll on 2009 for more disappointments :p

Its been a kind of messy year for me this year.

Its had some really great points, including the Glasgow Film Festival which while being voluntary has led to some interesting paid jobs throughout the year.
Ive had a fair few weddings which have kept things ticking over and a few other things which have supplemented income through photography.

But i havnt got anything i had planned to do done, websites etc have let me completely bewildered and despite the fact that i have had some great points in the year, it has all fizzled out over the last 3 or 4 months.

Next year is a big one for me, i'm looking at going back to college, and from day one i feel its time to give this a real push and get everything organised and in place.

I'm starting to feel a bit of a drive again, the Film Festival takes place again in February and hopefully that will be another chance to cement some contacts etc.

First off, I can't believe it's almost a year since we had a thread about our photographic hopes for the year.

Overall I am pretty happy with how I've done.

I made my one and only Boards meet.

I entered a photo in the Boards Photobook.

I entered my first competition, even though I didn't come anywhere.

I joined a photography club, which has been pretty good so far.

I've found an interest in wildlife and landscape shots.

I've been getting out and about more, especially in town, without caring about people watching me.

I am getting one of my shots printed and framed as a present, which I would never have done before.

I had a couple of shots printed for money, and actively got one of the jobs myself.

And finally, I finished off my punishing year of eircom League football with a trip to Croker for the Ireland/Poland game, which was a good experience.

    Brilliant for me.

Started off by being asked to join the Council at DCC. I had a few improvements in mind there to make a good Camera Club even better. Have been going well with a few of those things this year. Have encouraged a few of the newer members to get involved in the competitions & we now have a stand alone Novice Section in the competitions.

Have updated the body to a D300 as well as getting the new G9 along with a few other bits & bobs.

Worked towards an LIPF Panel which was successful last month.

Won a Macbook in a Photographic Competition.

I am heading up a Project in DCC to produce a Photographic Exhibition at Kilmainham Gaol next year.

Asked to become a Mod here.

Quite a good year for me.

I think it has been good. I only actually got into photography in Feb of this year ( though i prefer to think i was seduced into it ) and i have been learning and sapping ever since.

I spent some time just living my life and having a camera with me to take advantage of photographic moments. Went to some interesting places like the Mini Kings of Concrete and the World Street Performance Championships and got some shots that made me believe maybe i have a bit of an eye for this thing.

In June i was tasked with covering an entire two day event and managed to do so quite well with the help of my partner in crime.

I ended up being in a book and also Modding a Photography Forum which at the very least told me that while i may not have a full understanding of the Media that i am not so stupid as to pushing my own view of it onto other people.

Over the year i have received some praise form the people who opinion's i value and i have received a lot of advice and help from them, which i value even more.

I think i have progressed in my understanding not only of photography but also in what kind of photographer i want to be.

All in all, for someone who is at this for less than a year i think i come up with some decent enough pictures, i think i have a lot to learn and a lot to improve on and that keeps me excited for 2009.:)

    The positives:

Had an image printed on the front of the Herald and in The Star, and in many local newspapers around the country as well a few Football Programmes, RTE News and Website and have supplied Images for the Bohemians FC Calendar.

    Did peoples Photography, great fun.

Joined a Club, Offshoot in Dalkey.

    Got paid for taking pictures.

Shot in Croke Park for a Soccer Match and The National Stadium for Boxing

    The negatives:

Spent a jaysus fortune, and want more gear!

Met Shep the Dog who seems to have latched on to me and sees me as his older and wiser (Not to mention prettier) mentor.

I got my camera at Christmas last year and since then I have been learning how to use it.

Even though I'm not very good at it, I love taking photos.

I have learned so much in the last year, here's to a productive 2009!

Mixed year for Calina this year.

    1) made photography mod.
    2) bought 40D in April
    3) bought Photoshop in February
    4) took three outstanding kite photographs in April, July and November
    5) 40D stopped working in November. Tears froze in my head.
    6) 17-85mm appears to be dead as well. IS is an electronics step too far.
    6) missed Charleville Castle this year.
    7) Joined Camera Club
    8) published in regional newspapers and sports magazine
    9) photographs hanging in a shop
    10) bought a 50mm 1.8
    11) published a limited edition calendar.

I shot lots flickr'd some of it binned a lot more. Did a course which was insightful, had loads of ideas. Now that I've settled on one bring on 2009. I've just decided on a project fingers crossed there'll be an exhibition by the end of it.

I didn't really buy much in the way of gear this year but here's hoping for 2009.

    Bit confusing for me

-Got to travel around parts of OZ and NZ taking photos
-Did my first (and last) official wedding
-Did a few gigs (would love to more of this if I got the chance)
    -Did the People's photography
-Got into shooting birds in latter part of the year. I like this at the minute and will keep it up. As a result I haven't been up to much else with the camera (landscapes, IR, macro etc has suffered :()
-Haven't been posting on here as much as I should have since mid year..:o

I've had a fairly good year. I met some of my goals, and haven't hit the others.

Continued to cover all levels of rugby, and even made it in to cover international games.

Started to cover football and again made it to cover international games.

Signed a contract with a football club for continued use of my images, and made further contacts through that.

Have had images used/printed/published, but would like more.

Still learning, and know I've a long way to go.

Outside of sports photography, had two wonderful trips to the US this year and a lovely trip to Clare/Galway, and captured some photos I was thrilled with. Many are now prints around my home for friends/family to see.

Had a pretty amazing year , 2 exhibitions, won 2 cometitions (FWC Pix.ie & TG4) ; and a couple of runners up (have pretty much stopped entering now) - made it on to television , where I embarrased myself early in the morning - Started doing music stuff over the summer , bought 2 cameras (the competitions helped) - Nikon d 300 & Panasonic Lx3 - still very much an amateur , as I made no money - plan doing an MA in documentary abroad next year, if i get in .
So lots of accolades , but no financial gain - but boards certainly helped me kick off to wherever it is I'm going - so thanks to those that helped me early on.

Great year for me, because I finally got into photography! Bought my first (ever) camera in July and have been having fun getting to grips with it since. Have sold a couple of things, nothing major, but encouraging all the same. Big plans for photography in 2009:)

I've had a pretty good year.

As a strictly hobby photographer (and with no intentions to be anything but), I started the year with 3 main aims, to wean myself off 'auto', to actively make myself go out with the camera and seek out photographic opportunities, rather than just having it in the car, and to put a panel in for the LIPF distinction.

I've done well on the first two, helped by upgrading to a D300 that doesn't have an auto option:). I've also made more of an effort to get out and about, like this and this.

I didn't get around to an L panel, for lots of reasons (slight lack of motivation on my part, building and moving in to a new house and the arrival of my gorgeous daughter in April).

In addition, I've gotten around to acquiring a pixie, gotten paid for a portrait session, been to a boards meet in Charleville (more pics here), won two camera club competitions, got a pretty well received picture in the boards book and generally enjoyed the whole thing!

EDIT: I forgot to add that I've found myself getting more involved here (whether that's to anyone's benefit other than my own, I'm not sure!)

For my 1st year I am more than happy...especially with the amount of Gigs I'm covering and getting bits and pieces of DIY work with people I know well so obviously I get 0.5% of what I should be charging! :o
Delighted that I have an "eye" for it and also finally the last few months learning more about PP.
Will attempt my 1st pitch side Footy match this Sunday and hopefully I'll be mostly happy with what I get as I would like to cover Sport more.
Quite chuffed my Pix.ie site has had almost 127K hits in less then a year!
Now if only I knew or had the time to go about doing a website!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 519 ✭✭✭ThenComesDudley

No big goals achieved here yet...

Finally got college out of the way, and my first Dslr this year.
Building my confidence to actually wander around on the street taking photos, and exploring new places.

Finally learned and mostly understand Aperture and F/stop, Importance of light and exposure time.

Also have a picture in the Boards Book :)

Now im gonna set down a goals list for 09

Bloody brilliant year. All the goals were hit and more were added which I got too.

Covered all levels of rugby, football, gaa. Now doing internationals for both rugby and football, also will be at the world cup next year with Ireland Cricket Club. I'll also be covering some games in England.

Came second individually in the National Shield competition, just after joining the local camera club.

Published regionally each week and nationally every so often. Now the newspaper which I did work for folded, I've had a few offers which I need to suss out after Christmas.

Have an accreditation for the Superbowl processed and awaiting on the verdict.

Upgraded to the lenses and bodies I wanted along with a dedicated laptop with CS3

Picked up more PR work that led to other commissions and did a couple of weddings.

Commissioned by leading Sports Photography agency to provide images of UEFA Cup games in Riga and Berlin and a few other games/events that were published in the major nationals. (Trying get your equipment onto aircraft as cabin baggage is not the easiest).

Had requests from a number of UK football clubs for images of their players on international duty.

Still don't get out as much as I'd like. Tried my hand at landscapes but didn't succeed but will try again.

Never got around to the macro or strobs and will make more effort in taht regard in 2009. (Have a feeling crimbo present is a studio kit)

I'd like to beat Terry. Whatcha reckon are the chances? Nil, or snowball in hell?

I assume it's for here actually. My ban and infraction count here is way higher than it is over in C&T plus there's all those Helpdesk and Feedback threads which you two gave me causing my profile to be raised from unknown to worthy of a nomination. I mean it's only thanks to you AR, that anyone outside photography or C&T has heard of me. I can only thank you for that.

Negatives: Got confirmations that I suck in photography and processing, spent a lot on films and scanning, no new HW (just PC), broke one camera, failed to study one book on processing, haven't attended single studio session and realised that I won't get a camera I'd like to get at least this year.
Positives: Got my (bad quality) picture published in a book, met a lot of fantastic people, played with their cameras, spent night listening to Fajitas' snoring, started using Light Room, started to understand Gowan's processing techniques, sold few photos and posters, posed as a model and didn't get drunk.

    Overall - nothing to celebrate.

2008 year was a great year for me as it was the year as I opened myself to the possibility of photography. I bought two cameras, one being my first DSLR complete with three lenses. I'm really enoying this malarky and anywhere I go, with or without my camera I see myself lining up possible future camera snaps in my mind!
