Thailand - New Years Eve. Bangkok?

Right, I'm heading over to thailand for a few weeks. Arrive into Bangkok at 8am on the 30th.

The plan all along was to do the obvious, which was to fly from Bangkok to Koh Samui, then get the boat across to Koh Phangan. Stay up the north side of the island and hit the 30k person beach party down the south side for New Years.

Well; we're a lazy bunch....and now the flights down on the 30th from Bangkok are gone. The earliest I can get on the 31st is at 4.30pm which isn't really an option.

So, just curious, is it worth the efforts of trying to get down via bus/boat/train, or should we just say feck it and stay in Bangkok for New Years. We'll always have the full/half moon to go to in a week or so.

And if so.... what're the best spots for it. I was reading about the countdown in front of the world trade center (or whatever its called now). mentions that there would be a few hundred thousand there. Anyone been/experienced it?

    any other ideas????

If you really want to get down for the new years party then get an Air Asia flight to Surat Thani and then Ferry to Samui/Phangan. That Wouldn't be too much bother.

Personally, I'd stay in Bangkok although I've never been there for New Years.

Outside Central World (Word Trade Center) would probably be the best spot to go if you do spend it there.
