Well done to Derek, did very well considering it was him against everyone else!
Crap argument by the male caller on the whole when you buy a airsoft gun, you will move onto the real deal later idea, Derek called him on it beautifully by asking the caller had he owned a toy gun when he was younger

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,052 ✭✭✭Dr_Pepper

Looks like it was all due to some cork advertisement that people didn't like, but i only caught the end of it.
Will be awaiting the mp3 later.

Presumanly he's proved that logic by saying that when he was younger he owned a "cabbage patch" doll.....

Nor was I aware an interest in the "real deal" was somehow intrinsically evil....

    (I despair betimes....)

No he shot himself in the foot(puntastic i know but anyway) by saying he owned a potato gun, which is more powerful than an airsoft gun:D

I knew there'd be a vegetable theme somewhere.

I'll stop now, as my cup of contempt brimmeth over.

Well done Derek its not very often the accused get to silence the doubters on the Joe Duffy show. You held yourself well and stuck to the point. 1 joule.... even the doctor had no come back...... Credit you you buddy! - Jay

Missed it but it sounds like Derek did a great Job defending the sport yet again
    Well done Derek

Just to add my thanks for a robust and measured defence of our sport by Derek. Wish we had a few more like that. Thank you. E.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,458 ✭✭✭✭gandalf

Thanks to him for that especially as that show is normally a whinge fest with no attempt to counter the views of the presenter, I'll listen to it later if I get a chance (if someone can let me know whereabouts timewise its in the stream).

If he just showed that sort of attitude in the past we would be in a much stronger position than having attempted schisms within the airsoft community.

Not surprising given the usual clientele of liveline....

That male caller is right though, as soon as those kids have exhausted the appeal of an airsoft gun, they will no doubt move to a ready supply of real handguns.

And by right I mean stupid

Didn't hear it but fair ****s to Derek, he's done the community a great service today

Im convinced that liveline has a panal of people with extreme views that they call everytime they have an emotive subject. Im 100% convinced that Joe Duffy is the Irish Jerry Springer.

Credit where it's due - fair play to ya Derek

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,483 ✭✭✭Ostrom

The 'gateway' logic of angry citizen #1834746353 is unfortunately the very concept your average angry panel will draw on to make sense of the term airsoft.

It's nothing specific to this airsoft gun argument where
    x+(<1joule)=kiddie gunplay

Its still upsetting to hear it reproduced day after day....

    +1
A friend of mine was actually employed by fm104 for a very similar role on a late night show to spice it up if they had no callers, i.e call in with something to cause controversy, sadly it worked.

You may laugh now, but eventually, these kids with toy guns will organise, meet up regularly, train and then form an organisation to lobby political figures.

    Oh no...

Credit where credit is due. He discussed the issue with facts.
    Fair play to you Derek.

    Hey! Stop insulting Jerry.

I was willing to give Mr Duffy the benefit of doubt when he first starting covering airsoft in his shows. Ignorance of a unadvertised sport is forgiveable. However, Mr Duffy has now had ample time to pick up the facts yet he still regurgitating this crap on his show. It's purely to attract listeners, and he really couldn't care less who gets hurt.

Nicely handled Derek, from my point of view it ended up being some good publicity for the sport.

Is there any other way of listening? RTEs streaming is terrible! It rarely ever works properly in any browser I have.

The link id 4 posts up, I think the airsoft bit is about 15 minutes in I can't make out anymore than that the stream is garbled.

Just listened to the show . Well done Derek.

But should there have been an ad in the first place, knowing the kind of reaction that it brings from the public.
I know for a retailer its business to advertise but surely word of mouth and websites would have been preferable than front page ads without correct wording.
especially seen as the general public see us airsofters as bad guys.

I just hate hearing about bad press about our sport.
But again well done Derek for holding your own.:D

You have top advertise. Word of mouth is great for reputation but how many times has someone told you about this great something or other somewhere in Dublin? People need to have a way to contact you.

WEll i just listened to the show there and it was full of some mighty tripe, but a prime example of how people are A) uneducated in the matter and b) exagerators.

I think I'm right in saying that Derek didnt just ring up and decide to go on air to defend us, he was obviously contacted in regarding the piece. Be advised that this things dont happen on the spot, this woman would have rang a good bit in advance to relay her piece, to which im assuming derek was asked to reply in comment. To non airsofters- he did the sport a good service with some good airsofting pieces, however there was a certain number of comments that were untrue, however i wont nip pick, but a few comments that were not correct.

However, letting an ad go published like that, that was so ridiculously ill informed and misguided was a bit of a stupid ploy. As much as it might be honourable for derek to mention he has given those in chagre in cork a slap on the wrist for the matter, the fact is, the advertisement has stirred plenty of controversy, has given the editor of the paper an easy choice in not runnig these types of ads anymore which could effect similar papers. But like i said it caused an uneccesary stir... I only know from listening to shiva when we rolled out an ad, to the detail he put into making it look as less military as possible. I thought that would be common sense when you know the target audience of these papers are generally mid-old aged folk, completely unaware of airsoft.

I've never met Derek, ive only heard stories. From what i read here, i assumed that he had gone on air and went on a crusade to save airsoft. However what i heard, was a guy whose business was brought up on air being pounded by ill informed worriers, to which he was asked to reply, to which he did ( admirably i might ad, albeit a few mistakes on facts but live radio is daunting)

But I still cannot turn in myself the fact this is the guy ive heard rampant stories about, a guy who publicy ridicules the iaa along with not supporting them, who i might add are the real airsoft represent here and as soon as they get contacted in regards to these shows the better.

There was some admirable defending of the sport, but in relation to saving face on his own business from an attack from 2 callers, lets not forget that.

I dont want to sound like a big sour head, yeah he conveyed some good defensive points, but coming from the guy who acts like he does in regards to the IAA, I can't think otherwise that he was just saving face for his business, to which inenvertly defended airsoft to a certain point, but i dont think the general players were in his mind when he made his comments..more concerned with nipping in the bud some comments regarding his business.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 277 ✭✭-PornStar-

All that doesn't change the fact he represented the sport well now does it. The guys personal opinion is his own, it is also separate from this topic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,140 ✭✭✭✭TheDoc

Like I said he made some good comments, maybe i look into things too much, and get too critical of reactions of people.

I just find the supportive comments from someone so negetive towards the main body trying to represent this sport properly, completely obsurd and confusing.

I could divulge more on the topic, but it would open an enormous can of contraversy and cause me more problems then its worth on the matter, to which im sure most people in here are well aware of.

But i made my point. It was yeah, ok derek well done you spoke well and defended your business well.

But it came across instantly to me as defending his business and not airsoft, like i said, i read this thread before listening and was expecting some mighty crusade or something, or something worth all the thanks.

If that piece was more focused around airsoft in general and not an advertisement, i guarantee that no one in advance would have been asked to come on the show to defend the debate, maybe 1 or 2 people that may have been involved previously, but somehow i doubt the PR officer from the iaa would be asked to go on.

Love them or loathe them, the quicker the IAA are first on the list for these shows to contact the safer i will feel that my airsoft kit isnt going to be made redundant

    IAA MIA conspiracy!

Whatever way ye look at it, the sport lives another day, I'm happy with that.

Lets not hypothesise about his motivations on boards, he isnt on the site so its unfair to go on about him.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 899 ✭✭✭oisindoyle

I always find that whatever the topic ,the presenter of this show nearly always interuptts and never lets the person speak

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,140 ✭✭✭✭TheDoc

The fact his immaturity and unprofessionalism went and got him banned from boards shouldn't stop me voicing my opinion.

As well as this might be a free voicing forum, it is a discussion/debating forum, and this is a topic to which everyone can post constructive opinions about that conform within the charter ( which is the main reason i havnt elaborated my posts to the full extent id like to go too)
