Hardly a deterrent to other riders when they consider the risk vs reward?

Italian rider Emanuele Sella has received a one-year doping ban from the Italian Olympic Committee (Coni).

Sella, 27, tested positive for a blood-boosting EPO substance in an out-of-competition control before he confessed to doping in August.

A tribunal has agreed with Coni's recommendations that Sella's ban should be reduced to one year as the rider had collaborated with the authorities.

His backdated ban will now end on 18 August 2009.

Sella won three stages of the 2008 Giro d'Italia in May.

He named his doctors, suppliers and all his contacts. The rules allow a reduced ban if you fully co-operate and 'fess up.
It hard to take but was better then when an ex MTB worrld champ owned up simply because he was so guilt ridden , tried to give the medals to the rightful winner but was stopped doing that offically and got a full ban any way.
He's also banned from a protour team for 4 years (as if that matters :()

I wonder will the Giro throw up any more "amazing" climbers next year? This year we had Sella and Rico.

Thats fair enough - would much prefer to see someone help enquiries but one year ban for a cheat who won 3 stages on a grand tour :(

I suppose the key issue here is the original 2 year ban enough?

Lifetime bans should be handed out to ALL who are caught doping, might deter others, and would certainly go a long way to cleaning up the sport, which has been tainted by this for so long
