protocol for quitting a part-time job?

Ok, well currently I have a job as a Christmas temp in a certain high street clothes shop that will remain nameless! I only intended keeping on the job during my Christmas holidays from college but now I really want to quit. I don't really like the atmosphere of the place and although I gave them my available hours they scheduled me to work during college hours and would not allow me change. On top of this it took 2 weeks of annoying them until they finally put me on the payroll. :( I'm just sick of problem after problem there.
The thing is I've only been working there 1 month and I've been quietly trying to find out whether I am entitled to quit after such a short amount of time, but I don't want to directly ask my managers because they aren't the nicest of people and I would rather avoid confrontation with them as much as possible. I only think I can quit because although I am working an "8 hour contract",which requires me to work a minimum of 8 hours per week although I'm always scheduled for 16, I signed no contract and I'm presuming I'm not legally obliged to remain working there. Would anybody know where I stand in all this please?

Just give them a weeks notice and leave. There shouldnt be a problem! There's not much they can do, they might complain but cant do much more.

If you signed no contract then you're grand, just give them in a letter saying you're done.

Even if you did sign a contract, you'd probably still be on probation, so either party can terminate without notice.

Give them a week's notice and leave.

I don't like my job either, but there aint much else available, so just gotta tough it out. You confident you'll find another job?

A contract would take precedence over the statutory notice period once it doesn't contravene the law, but yeah - a week's notice and be done with it.

Like the rest of them said, a weeks notice and you'll be grand. Alternatively, suck it in for the next two weeks and take the wages. If you're just working there for the Christmas, you can just say no thanks if they offer to keep you on. With things the way they are two weeks wages is not to be sniffed at.

Thanks for all that guys. I figured it'd be something quite straight forward but I doubt they tell me so!

I do have a weekend job anyway, so I wouldn't be leaving myself in the lurch. If I didn't I'd certaintly grin and bear it, but I think seeing the difference in how different jobs can treat the employees is a valuable lesson. Not even in perks or whatever, but general attitude really makes all the difference because on paper this job would be the better one, but not so!

    So they'll be getting a week's notice and im off....thanks ;)
